経緯
パートナーとなる以前からすでに、ロジャースもハマースタインもそれぞれ成功をおさめていた。
ロジャースは20年以上ロレンツ・ハートとコラボレートしており、『A Connecticut Yankee』（1927年）、『Babes in Arms』（1937年）、『The Boys from Syracuse』（1938年）、『Pal Joey』（1940年）、『By Jupiter 』（1942年）などのブロードウェイ・ミュージカルのほか、映画でも多くのヒット作を生み出していた[4]。
ハマースタインはルドルフ・フリムルと共にオペレッタ『Rose-Marie』（1924年）を、シグマンド・ロンバーグと共にオペレッタ『The Desert Song』（1926年）、『The New Moon』（1928年）を共作し、ジェローム・カーンとの『Sunny』（1925年）のヒットで成功しはじめた。カーンとのミュージカル『ショウボート』（1927年）はアメリカのミュージカルの最高傑作の1つとみなされている[5]。カーンとのコラボレーションにはほかに『Sweet Adeline』（1929年）、『Very Warm for May』（1939年）などがある。『Very Warm for May』は批評家から酷評されたが、使用楽曲『All the Things You Are』はカーンとハマースタインのコラボ作品の中でもっとも人気の曲となった[6]。
1940年代初頭までに、ハートは深刻なアルコール依存症および情緒不安定に陥り仕事にならなくなり、ロジャースはハマースタインにコラボレーションを持ちかけた[7] 。
