撮影者はカニ漁の船にクルーと共に乗り込み、毎年死者が出る程に過酷なベーリング海のカニ漁の仕事とそれに携わる人々のありのままを寝食も運命も共にしてカメラに収めている。毎シーズンの最後には撮影秘話や撮影の裏側を編集した総集編が放送される。命懸けの仕事であるため、クルーの感情表現などもストレートなものが多く、「ピー音」による自主規制が多く入るのも番組の特徴ともいえる。

訃報

第1シーズンより登場していたコーネリア・マリー号の船長フィル・ハリスが2010年2月9日、脳卒中で亡くなった。フィル・ハリス船長は第4シーズンで倒れ、緊急施術をするなど健康状態が芳しくなく、漁に出ることに関してもドクターストップが出るような状態があった。なお、第6シーズンでは、ハリス船長が船内で倒れてから亡くなるまでの模様を放送した。
