略歴

ケンブリッジでケンブリッジ大学の鉱物学教授、聖職者のジョン・スティーブンス・ヘンズローの息子に生まれた。1854年にケンブリッジ大学のクライスツ・カレッジに入学し、学位を得た（1858年にB.A. 、1861年にM.A.）。1859年に、イングランド国教会の助祭(deacon)、1861年に司祭(priest)に叙階された。1864年にロンドン・リンネ協会のフェローに選ばれた。1861年から1872年の間、グラマー・スクールの校長を務め、1868年から1880年の間は、聖バーソロミュー病院で植物学を教え、ロンドン大学のバークベック・カレッジ、ロンドンのクイーンズ・カレッジでも教えた。St John's Wood Chapelなどの教会の助任司祭(Curate)も務めた。

王立園芸協会の名誉教授を務め、1897年に最初のヴィクトリア名誉メダルが60人の人物に贈られた時の受賞者の一人になった。進化論に関する議論では有神的進化論（theistic evolution）の立場にたち、急進的な進化論者、アウグスト・ヴァイスマンと論争した。

1910年代後半に "The proofs of the truth of spiritualism" や"The religion of the spirit world"を執筆し、心霊主義に興味を示した。
