『未来神』(Initiation)は、アメリカのミュージシャン、トッド・ラングレン(Todd Rundgren)による6枚目のアルバムで、1975年5月23日にベアズヴィル・レコードからリリースされた。

このアルバムで、ラングレンは自身のバンドユートピアで深く探求し始めたシンセサイザーを用いたプログレッシブ・ロックのサウンドを完全に取り入れている。しかし、ユートピアではギター演奏に専念していたのに対し『Initiation』では多くのシンセサイザーの演奏およびプログラミングをラングレン自身が担当している。

レコードについて

収録時間が67分を超える『Initiation』は1枚のLPディスクとして商業的にリリースされたアルバムの中でも最長クラスの作品である。プラスチック不足の影響でアルバムを1枚のレコードに収めるためにラングレンはマスタリング時に低音域を抑えるEQ処理を施し溝の幅を小さくして1枚に収まるよう調整せざるを得なかった。また、A面前半(「Real Man」から「Eastern Intrigue」まで)とB面全体の楽曲をスピードアップしそれぞれ2〜3分短縮している。

アルバムのオリジナル内袋には次のような注意書きが記載されていた：

技術的注意：このディスクには1時間以上の音楽が収録されているため2つの点にご注意ください。第一に、針が摩耗または損傷している場合ディスクをすぐに傷めてしまいます。第二に、再生時に音量が十分でないと感じる場合は音楽をテープに録音し直すことをお勧めします。ちなみに、アルバムをご購入いただきありがとうございます。

なお、アルバムのタイトルやコンセプトはアリス・A・ベイリーの著書『宇宙の火の教義（A Treatise on Cosmic Fire）』から直接引用されたものである。

批評家の反応

『The Illustrated New Musical Express Encyclopedia of Rock(NMEロック音楽大事典・図解版)』においてニック・ローガンとボブ・ウォフィンデンは次のように書いている：

「『Initiation』は、禅仏教やアリス・A・ベイリーの『宇宙の火の教義』に影響を受けた歌詞や東洋神秘主義的なスコアにおける、未熟で気取った探求にもかかわらずかつてのラングレンの旋律的な創造力の痕跡が感じられる作品であり、同時に自己パロディや皮肉を込めた風刺的な視点も垣間見ることができる。ラングレンが一方で真剣に提示しようとしている思想を自ら皮肉っているようにも見える。」 「わずかに1時間を超える本作は制作された中でも最長クラスのアルバムの一つであり、自己抑制の感覚はともかくとして彼の卓越したエンジニアリング能力の証とも言えるだろう。」

影響

『Initiation』の影響がバンド「クイーン・エリザベス」やアルバム『Rite²』に見られることについて、トッド・ラングレンが自分の音楽に影響を与えたかと尋ねられた際ジュリアン・コープは次のように答えている：

「僕とサイポールサンドラは『宇宙の火の教義（A Treatise on Cosmic Fire）』が大好きだった。でも2人ともあれがアンビエント・ミュージックという概念が定義されるはるか前に録音されていたせいで、トッドがそれを常に変化するほとんどプログレ・ロック的な作品として扱っていたことを残念に思っていたんだ。僕たちはあの作品の壮大な要素が大好きだったけれど実際にはあまり聴き返すことがなかった。だから僕たちはあのトッド的な“超越性”を自分たちの音楽(クイーン・エリザベス)に取り入れようとしたんだ。」
