IDEAとは、共通鍵暗号方式によるデータ暗号化アルゴリズムのひとつで、スイス工科大学のJames L.MasseyとXuejia Lai、スイスのAscom社によって開発されたものである。1992年に発表された。
IDEAはブロック暗号方式で、一般に安全性の高いといわれている128ビット長の暗号鍵が用いられる。暗号化アルゴリズムが知れ渡っても、暗号鍵が秘密のまま保たれていれば高いセキュリティを発揮し続けることができるという特徴があり、最も内容の知れ渡っている暗号化アルゴリズムとも言われる。米国やヨーロッパ圏の各国で特許が取得されており、Ascom社によってライセンスされている。

International Data Encryption Algorithm (IDEA) はチューリッヒ工科大学の James Massey と来学嘉が設計し、1991年に発表したブロック暗号。DESの代替を意図したアルゴリズムである。IDEAは PES (Proposed Encryption Standard) を若干手直しした暗号であり、元々は IPES (Improved PES) と呼ばれていた。
