AARPは、エセル・パーシー・アンドラス博士（カリフォルニア州の退職した教育者）とレオナルド・デイヴィス（後の保険会社のコロニアル・ペン・グループの設立者）によって設立されたアメリカの会員制の団体である[4][5]。旧称、アメリカ退職者協会(American Association of Retired Persons)。
