ベンジャミン・モレル（英: Benjamin Morrell、1795年 7月5日 - 1839年）は、アメリカ合衆国のアザラシ漁船船長かつ探検家であり、1823年から1831年の間に主に南極海や太平洋諸島への一連の航海を行い、その体験を『4つの航海の話』という話題の多い回顧録に記録した。同時代人の中でのモレルの評判は虚偽と空想のものであり、特に南極での経験に関する証言は、一部ゴーストライターの書いたものとして、地理学者や歴史家の間で議論になってきた。

「最南端到達の歴史」の記事における「ベンジャミン・モレル」の解説

1823年 11月、アメリカのアザラシ漁船船長ベンジャミン・モレルが、スクーナーのワスプでサウスサンドイッチ諸島に到着した。モレル自身の後の証言に拠れば、その後南に航行して、意図せずに1か月前にウェッデルが進んだ経路を辿っていた。モレルは南緯 70度14分に達したと言っており、そこから船のストーブ用燃料が足りなくなったために北に転じた。そうでなければ疑いなく南緯 85度にも達することができたと主張していた。北に転じた後で、幾らか詳細に表現した陸地に出逢ったと主張しており、モレルはそこをニューサウスグリーンランドと名付けた。この陸地はその後存在しなかったことが証明された。モレルの嘘つきで詐欺師という評判は、その地理的な主張がほとんど学者によって否定されたからだったが、その主張を裏付けるための試みも行われてきた。
