1989年に財政悪化を受けてデトロイト市は公立高校のスポーツプログラムを全廃する計画を発表した。ビンはこれに対して反対キャンペーンを展開し、スポーツプログラム継続のために37万3000ドルの寄付金を集めた。結局デトロイトの有権者たちは増税の道を選び、スポーツプログラム全廃計画も廃止された。ビンが集めた寄付金は学校へと納められた。 2008年10月16日にデトロイト市長への立候補を表明した。2009年2月24日の予備選挙では1位で通過し、2009年5月5日の決選投票で対立候補のケニス・クックエール・ジュニアを破って当選した。クワメ・キルパトリック前市長の後任として5月11日に74代目デトロイト市長に就任した。
