2011年9月28日、シリーズ6最終回「ドクター最後の日」の放送に数日先駆けて、BBCの管理者ザイ・ベネットはコスト削減のためシリーズの中止を告知した[8]。番組が公式にキャンセルされて24時間以内にFacebookとTwitterのアカウントが番組の保護のために立ち上げられ、両者がリンクしたオンラインの請願書は2万名以上の署名を獲得し[9]、最終的には5万名を突破した[10]。脚本家ニール・ゲイマン（「ハウスの罠」）やトム・マクレー（「無情に流れる時間」）など番組に携わった人間は番組の削減に懸念を表明し[11]、主演のマット・スミスも反対した[10]。

2012年、シリーズ7のエグゼクティブ・プロデューサーであるキャロライン・スキナーは、Confidential のキャンセルを補うために、BBCの『ドクター・フー』公式ウェブサイトで舞台裏のミニドキュメンタリーをリリースすると発表した[12]。エピソードの多くは5分未満であった。
