じゅん‐わくせい【準惑星】

《dwarf planet》太陽を公転する天体で、惑星の定義を満たさないもののうち比較的大型なもの。2006年に国際天文学連合（IAU）が設けた新しい分類で、これにより長らく惑星とされていた冥王星が準惑星とされた。惑星は（1）太陽を公転し、（2）自己重力で球形となっていて、（3）衛星以外の他天体を引力で取り込んだり逆に重力散乱で遠ざけたりしたため、公転軌道近くには他天体がないもの、と定義づけられたが、準惑星はこの（3）を満たさない。矮小惑星。矮惑星。

準惑星（じゅんわくせい、英: dwarf planet）とは、太陽の周囲を公転する惑星以外の天体のうち、それ自身の重力によって球形になれるだけの質量を有するもの。国際天文学連合（IAU）が2006年8月24日に採択した第26回総会決議5A（以下、決議5Aと略）の中で「惑星」を再定義した際に、同時に定義された太陽系の天体の新分類である。
