クラウドファンディング（英語: crowdfunding）は、群衆（crowd）と資金調達（funding）を組み合わせた造語である。多数の人による少額の資金が他の人々や組織に財源の提供や協力などを行うことを意味する。ソーシャルファンディングとも呼ばれ[1]、日本語では「クラファン」と略されることもある[2]。

- ^ 日本の読者に当時の状況が分かるように解説すると、数世紀前「本を出版する」ということがまだ、活版印刷機でひとつひとつの文字を手作業で活字として組み、紙を一枚一枚印刷機に手で入れ、ぶとうやりんごの圧搾機（プレス）のような印刷機の取っ手を人の手で回して一枚づつ印刷していた時代、「本を出版する」ということだけでもそれなりの規模の「事業」であり、一冊の本を出版するのにも多大な労力とかなりの費用がかかり、執筆者や出版社が世の読者の意向をあらかじめ調べないで本を印刷する場合、せっかく苦労し費用をかけ執筆・校正・印刷したのに、その本を買おうとする人がかなり少ないということが印刷後に判るような事態に陥り、出版社や執筆者は執筆・出版でかけた費用を回収できず、そうした見込み違いを何度か犯すだけで、在庫を抱えて倒産・破産してしまうリスクがつきまとっていた。その結果、そのリスクを回避・軽減するしくみが生み出されたという経緯がある。
