たんぱく質一種アルツハイマー病パーキンソン病などの脳疾患発生にかかわる遺伝子として知られている。生理的にどのように作用するのか、詳細なところは分かっていない。

シヌクレイン」(synuclein)には、アルファシヌクレイン(α‐synuclein)の他にベータシヌクレイン(β‐synuclein)、ガンマシヌクレイン(γ‐synuclein)がある。アルファシヌクレインは、アルツハイマー病パーキンソン病患者の脳に異常に蓄積されることが分かっている。
