プロテウス (衛星)

プロテウス[8][9]（英語: Proteus、ギリシア語: Πρωτέας, Neptune VIII）は、海王星の第8衛星である。海王星の衛星の中では2番目に大きく、また海王星で最も大きな内衛星である。1989年に探査機ボイジャー2号によって発見された。ギリシア神話で姿を自由に変えられる海神のプローテウスにちなんで名付けられた。プロテウスは、海王星のほぼ赤道面を公転し、海王星の赤道半径の約4.75倍離れた軌道を公転している。

- ^ 以前の論文では、わずかに異なる大きさが報告されていた。1991年にThomasとVeverkaは440 × 416 × 404 kmと報告した[4][5]。1992年にCroftは430 × 424 × 410 kmと報告している[6]。この違いは異なる画像装置の使用と、プロテウスの形状が三軸楕円体でうまく説明できないという事実によって起きている[4]。
- ^ 質量は1994年のStookeによる体積値[4]と仮定密度の1.3 g/cm3から計算している。以前の論文での、わずかに大きいサイズを使用すると質量は5×1019 kgに増加する[1]。
