バンク・オブ・ニューヨーク（The Bank of New York、BNY）、あるいはニューヨーク銀行は、1784年にアレクサンダー・ハミルトンが設立した米国最古参の銀行であった。20世紀初頭から多国籍企業として活躍していた。銀行引受手形や合同運用信託などの特権を活用してきたが、信託サービスは機関化経済にあわせて上場投資信託やクリアリングへ傾いていった。2006年12月からメロン財閥に加わったが、JPモルガン・チェースとの関わりがなお深い。

^ 増資前に米英戦争や第二合衆国銀行創設という事件があった。ロンドンの2行は、一方がおそらくベアリングス銀行である^[3]。こういった事情から考えて、ニューヨーク銀行は合衆国の通貨供給量を支配する大英帝国の基地であったものと評価できる。
^ 合同運用信託（common trust fund or collective trust fund）はコモン・ロー上の信託制度である。合同運用信託は1937年に生まれた（A1ファンド）。投資家を401kなどに限るA2ファンドは1963年に追加創設された。これらがミューチュアル・ファンドにそっくりであるため、比較研究がなされている。決定的な違いは規制のされ方にあり、合同運用信託の方が緩く、リーズナブルに設計された。合同運用信託は1962年まで連邦準備制度の監督下にあったが、同年通貨監督局へ管轄が移った。合同運用信託は運用資産規模やパフォーマンスですら公表する必要がない。手数料設定が自由で、1年未満の払い戻し制限ができる。運用は銀行の特権であり、現金化の難しいものにも投資できる。銀行が運用することをめぐってはA2ファンド設計後にグラス・スティーガル法との関係が問題となった。現時点で運用者の資金を合同運用信託に投じることは許されていない。ドッド・フランク法の制定された2010年、証券取引委員会が投資会社法の脱法を懸念する発言をした。^[8]
