ホームズ彗星

ホームズ彗星（英語: 17P/Holmes）は、太陽系の短周期彗星の一つ。1892年11月6日にエドウィン・ホームズが発見した。通常は薄暗い天体であるが、2007年10月には突発的な増光（アウトバースト）が起こった。およそ40万倍もの増光は観測記録上前例がなく、肉眼でも観測可能となった。また、ホームズ彗星のコマが拡大した際には、彗星全体の視直径（見かけの大きさ）が一時的に太陽よりも大きくなった[5][6]。彗星核の直径は3.4 km程度であると計算されている[1][7]。
