本稿では、エイブラハム・リンカーンの前半生について、その生を受けてから40歳くらいまでを詳述する。リンカーンは、1809年2月12日に、ケンタッキー州ラルー郡の現在はホジェンビルと呼ばれる町の1室しかない丸太小屋で生まれた。エイブラハムという名前は開墾をしていた1786年にインディアンに襲われ、撃たれて死んだ祖父の名前を貰ったものだった。
