ウエスタン・サルーン

ウエスタン・サルーン（Western Saloon）ないしサルーンは、開拓時代のアメリカ西部に特有のバーである。 サルーンは、猟師や、カウボーイ、兵士、砂金掘り、鉱夫、ギャンブラーといった客向けのサービスを行っていた。 最初のサルーンは、1822年、ワイオミング[1]のブラウンズホール（Brown's Hole）で、猟師にサービスするために開業した[2]。 1850年代後半になると、サルーンという言葉は、酒や食事を出し副次的に宿泊もできる施設として、住所録に登場し、一般に使われるようになった[3]。 1880年頃に、サルーンは最盛期を迎えた。 例えば、カンザス州レブンワースには、「約150軒ものサルーンと4軒の卸酒屋があった」[4]。
