Deshaun Watson ties rookie QB record with 5 total touchdowns

The Texans also topped a franchise scoring record.

Deshaun Watson’s ascension to become a star for the Houston Texans has taken less than a month, and the rookie quarterback is already writing his name in the record books.

With four passing touchdowns and one rushing touchdown against the Tennessee Titans in Week 4 — his third career start — Watson became one of a handful of quarterbacks who have ever been responsible for five touchdowns as a rookie.

Matthew Stafford and Jameis Winston are the only two quarterbacks to throw five touchdown passes in a game as rookies, while Fran Tarkenton and Johnny Green matched Watson’s four touchdown passes and one rushing touchdown in games during their first seasons.

Rounding out the list is David Woodley who had three touchdown passes and two rushing touchdowns as a rookie in 1980.

Watson got play time in Week 1 against the Jacksonville Jaguars after Tom Savage was pulled two quarters into the season. While the rookie had an up-and-down game in Week 2, he was excellent against the New England Patriots last week and shredded the Titans in Week 4.

With 57 points against Tennessee, the Texans set a new franchise record for scoring — topping a 45-21 win over the Titans in 2014.
