Hornets Re-Sign P.J. Washington Jr.

PJ Washington Contract Extension Press Conference

August 29, 2023 – President of Basketball Operations and General Manager Mitch Kupchak announced today the Hornets have re-signed forward P.J. Washington Jr. Per team policy, terms of the deal were not disclosed.

Washington Jr. averaged a career-high 15.7 points in the 2022-23 campaign, in addition to posting 4.9 rebounds, 2.4 assists and 1.1 blocks per game across 73 contests (73 starts). He tallied nine games with at least 25 points in 2022-23 after logging five such games in his first three NBA seasons, and he was one of five players to record at least 50 steals, 75 blocks and 100 3-pointers last season, joining Jaren Jackson Jr., Jaden McDaniels, Kristaps Porzingis and Derrick White.

Washington Jr. erupted for a career-high 43 points in a win at Oklahoma City (March 28) while adding six rebounds, five assists and five 3-pointers, becoming the third Hornet ever to tally 40 points, five rebounds, five assists and five 3s in a game (Devonte’ Graham and Kemba Walker). Washington Jr.’s outburst included 22 points in the fourth quarter, his career high and tied for the third most in any quarter by a Hornet in the play-by-play era (since 1996-97).

Washington Jr., originally selected by the Hornets in the first round (12th overall) of the 2019 NBA Draft, has appeared in 260 games (219 starts) in his four-year career, notching averages of 12.9 points, 5.5 rebounds, 2.3 assists and 1.0 blocks in 30.2 minutes per game.
