Aurelio Vidmar has been named as coach of True Bangkok United, the struggling Thai League 1 side announced yesterday.

The Australian replaces Totchtawan Sripan, who has been appointed the club's technical director.

Vidmar, 55, will begin his reign at the Angels in the League Cup quarter-finals against Chonburi tomorrow.

The capital side were Thai League 1 title contenders at the end of last year but have gone downhill since the season resumed in January.

Bangkok United are fourth in the league, 17 points behind leaders Buriram United.

Vidmar parted ways with BG Pathum United earlier this season when the Rabbits were in contention for the league title.

Although they currently sit second, they are 15 points behind Buriram with five games remaining.

For Bangkok United, it is probably a good time to meet Chonburi, who have suffered a slump in form.

In today's first League Cup quarter-final match, Thai League 1 side PT Prachuap host third-tier club Uthai Thani. Although Prachuap are just one place above the relegation zone, they have enjoyed a good run with six wins and one draw in their last seven matches in all competitions.

In this weekend's other League Cup match, Chiang Rai United are at home to Pathum tomorrow. Buriram's game against Ratchaburi has been postponed because the league pacesetters have to play Daegu in an AFC Champions League play-off match in South Korea on Tuesday.
