St. Nicholas Magazine was an American children's magazine, founded in 1873 by Scribner's. In 1881 it was purchased by the publishers of Century Magazine. It was edited by Mary Mapes Dodge until her death in 1905, and published such authors as Mark Twain, Louisa May Alcott, Frances Hodgson Burnett, E.B. White and many other "top names" in children's writing. The magazine is named for jolly old St. Nick - who is after all the "special friend" of children! The magazine featured pieces for boys and girls of all ages. Earlier bound volumes ran from November through October; later volumes were generally issued every six months (e.g., Vol. 16, Part I & II). The magazine ceased publication in 1940.
