Subject:
A new illustrated history of Taiwan
Surprisingly readable and informative to both Taiwanese and foreigners seeking to know more about this important island and its history, this work serves both as a textbook and a popular history. My only complaint is that its story ends in the 1990s, despite being the 2015 edition. It is impressively illustrated, and frequently focuses on the individuals whose lives illustrate the narrative. What came as a surprise is how the author shows Taiwan as a people, place and history in its own right, rather than a part of either China or Japan.
