At least another year to see who will unseat Trentino
Strong blocking and a varied attack keep the world champions on top
Lausanne, Switzerland, October 24, 2012 – It was a fourth Men’s Club World Championship and a fourth Trentino Diatec title in Doha, Qatar, at the 2012 edition of the event. On the women's side it was a different story, as Sollys/Nestlé finally took the top prize on their third try.
The other teams will have to go home wondering if anyone will have what it takes to challenge Italian dominance of the Men's Club World Championship in 2013. All eight editions of the tournament have been won by a club from Italy.

“I am really glad for the title obtained by my team, above all the individual achievements,†Juantorena said at the end of the closing ceremony. “The Most Valuable Player awards is really something stimulating but the credit goes to the whole squad.â€
The spectacular wing spiker said he was surprised when his name was announced as the MVP for the third year in a row.
“The truth is that I was not expecting to win it again,†he said. “It just caught me off guard, but I am happy about winning again.â€
Juantorena was only the tournament’s fifth-best scorer, but he was its second-best spiker and third-best receiver. The top spiker of the tournament was Juantorena’s team mate Jan Stokr, whose 71 spikes in 111 attempts gave him a 63.96 per cent average. Emanuele Birarelli was the other Trentino player singled out for recognition, earning a tournament-high 16 blocks – including six against Al-Rayyan of Qatar on the first day of competition and six more against Brazil’s Sada Cruzeiro on October 16.
Trentino defeated Sada Cruzeiro in the final to win gold. Sada were a bit of a question mark coming into their first appearance at the Club World Championships. Cuban Yoandy Leal Hidalgo played his very first games with the club after signing with them, although it was a gentle introduction with limited court time. Top young gun Wallace de Souza was undeniably the star of the show for the South American champions. He was the competition’s best server and second-best scorer, and turned in the most dominating individual performance of the tournament with six aces and 32 points in Sada’s five-set loss to Trentino in Pool A. The Italian squad learned their lesson from that match, and in their 3-0 final win they held Wallace to 12 points.
Wallace was joined in the individual honours by team mates Sergio Nogueira, best receiver and best libero, and William Arjona, best setter.
In a surprising bronze medal final, Polish squad Skra Belchatow beat Russia’s Zenit Kazan to the last spot on the podium. Skra had been considered outside contenders with only an off chance to upset Trentino or Zenit, despite finishing second in the 2009 and 2010 editions of the Club World Championships. Several of the 2010 team’s standout players could no longer be called upon in this year’s edition, including MVP of the 2012 World League Bartosz Kurek, Poland captain and top blocker of the 2012 World League Marcin Mozdzonek, and French international Stephane Antiga. They relied heavily on the guidance of experienced coach Jacek Nawrocki, who has led Skra to seven consecutive Polish titles.
The competition’s top scorer, Aleksandar Atanasijevic, scored 22 points in the bronze medal match – 21 of them off of spikes. He finished the Club World Championships with 96 spikes and eight blocks for 104 total points.
Zenit never really found their rhythm, despite good performances from Maxim Mikhaylov, Matthew Anderson and Evgeny Sivozhelez. They went 2-1 in Pool B before being thrashed by Trentino in the semifinals and edged out by Skra to finish fourth. Although they looked strong coming into the championships, they seemed to feel the absence of injured captain Alexander Volkov on the court.
With their victory over last year’s champions, Rabita Baku, in the women's championship, Sollys/Nestlé – the team that had finished second in 2010 and third in 2011 – finally took the crown. They are the third Brazilian team to win the title, after Sadia Esporte Club Sao Paulo in 1991 and Leite Moca Sao Paulo in 1994. No other country has supplied more than one winning team.
As no women's champions have managed to successfully defend their title, it will be interesting to see if the superlative Sollys squad can come come back as strong in 2013. The formidable talent they can put on the court will be difficult for any challenger to match.
With a line up full of gold medallists from this summer’s Olympic Games, it was to be expected that Sollys would produce some impressive individual performances. Sheilla Castro was the top scorer and MVP of the tournament, while Thaisa Menezes was named top spiker. In fact, the top three spikers were Thaisa, Fernanda Rodrigues and Sheilla, and team captain Jaqueline Carvalho was fifth. Jaqueline was named best receiver of the competition, and Camila Brait took best libero honours.
“We are so happy to win this championship and we didn’t expect that would be easy,†Jaqueline said after the final. “The other team played very well. Our objective was achieved. We competed against a great team with a great coach, but our team played very good, almost a perfect performance. Our team is growing and we managed to achieve very good results. Thanks to Qatar, and thank you all.â€
Sada also made their mark on volleyball history in an unusual way. They were the first team to test a new video verification system being trialled at the Club World Championships by challenging a call from the referees during the third set of their first match against Bohai Bank of China.
Video cameras were set up around the court in the Aspire Dome, allowing team captains to approach the umpire and challenge a point which they thought had been called incorrectly. The regulations for the video verification establish that it can be called upon a team captain's request no later than five seconds after the rally has been finished.
Sada lost their first appeal, and coach Luizomar de Moura laughed it off after the match.
“I knew the spike of Fernanda Rodrigues was out of bounds but I wanted to take the chance and of course also make my way into history,†he said during the post-game press conference. “I think it is going to be good for volleyball.â€
Poland and Brazil are using similar systems already, but this is the first time they have been applied to an international event. A report on the experience will be presented at the upcoming Sports Events Council meeting, from which recommendations on its use will be made to the FIVB’s Executive Committee.
Although in the final it was Rabita’s Madelaynne Montano who pitched in with a game-high three aces (and a team-high 14 points) in the final, her team mate Angelina Hubner-Grun was named best server of the tournament. Montano was the competition’s second-best scorer with 53 points, and Suzana Cebic was ranked second-best libero. Foluke Akinradewo’s 12 blocks put her second in that category, as well, although her single-game total of six against Bohai Bank was not equalled.
Fenerbahce went home with the bronze medal after winning their final against Lacheras de Catano. Lancheras were surprise semifinalists in 2012, since few knew what to expect from the NORCECA entrant from Puerto Rico. They finished 1-1 in Pool B, but were unable to win a set off of their playoff opponents Sollys and Fenerbahce. Lancheras' Jessica Jones was named best blocker of the competition, while Nedime Elif Oner of Fenerbahce took the nod for best setter.
