The X Factor is at the O2 Arena for Boot Camp, and with Cheryl Cole and Dannii Minogue still away, Simon Cowell and Louis Walsh are on their own.
Simon firstly addresses the contestants, congratulating them for making it this far. He also announces that half of the 211 acts on the stage will be out of the competition by the end of the day. They each have one song to impress the panel.
Simon admits that he is surprised by who was voted through in the auditions, then host Dermot O'Leary confirms the song choices as the contestants try to stand out in their category:
Girls: 'If I Were A Boy' (Beyoncé)
Boys: 'Man In The Mirror' (Michael Jackson)
Over 25s: 'Poker Face' (Lady GaGa)
Groups: 'Nothing's Gonna Stop Us Now' (Starship)
Chloe Victoria struts into a rehearsal carrying a bottle of water. She brands herself "a stupid idiot" for going out on the razz the night before. She steps forward, alongside such faces as Annastacia Baker and Katie Waisell, who both give strong performances. Simon and Louis reveal that they like the category as a whole, and it will be hard to cut down the acts.
Choreographer Brian Friedman enters the stage, wearing a hoody without a t-shirt, which Simon questions, and introduces the next exercises for the remaining acts: dancing. Stephen Hunter feels that he will shed the pounds by doing his moves, while Mary Byrne is more concerned due to her arthritis. Despite being ambitious, Mary fails to cope and is forced to sit down for a period to recover. Zain Malik, who has never danced before, gets frustrated by his performance.
Zain then refuses to take part in the group performance, so Simon goes backstage to find him, and warns him that his attitude must change if he is to progress in the competition. Simon is glad that he gave it a go, in spite of the fact he looked uncomfortable throughout the performance. Next up is the groups and over 25s, and Mary's knee is still causing her trouble. However, a gutsy effort ensures that she pleases "that old Irish fella", Louis.
After the break, it is the final challenge of Boot Camp, as the contestants have to pick a song out of a list of 40 in order to wow the judges. Nicole Scherzinger returns to the panel to help Simon and Louis decide on their favourite acts Who will be able to get through to the Judges' Houses?
Cher Lloyd sings a unique, rap version of Coldplay's 'Viva La Vida', which wows the panel. Nicole brands her "original", while Simon gives her a reassuring wink. Keri Arrindell performs a rendition of Radiohead's 'Creep', while Princes and Rogues, Harry Styles and Charlene Dawson also excite the judges. Treyc Cohen receives applause from her fellow contestants for her diva-like performance, but Simon says that she may be "slightly one-dimensional".
Storm Lee, before rocking out with 'Sweet Child O'Mine', praises "gorgeous" Nicole and makes a heartfelt speech on his career. Meanwhile, Chloe Victoria disappoints the panel with a squealing performance. Louis's favourite Tom Richards ponders whether to ad lib or dance during his rendition of 'Live And Let Die'. Simon, Nicole and Louis reveal that they are delighted with his progress.
Liam Payne, who received a standing ovation in his audition, sings 'Stop Crying Your Eyes Out' by Oasis. Stephen Hunter's movement may not make up for his shaky vocals, while Yuli Minguel and Marlon McKenzie are also hopeful of not going home.
The Reason leave the panel undecided over their rendition of Lady GaGa's 'Bad Romance', after which John Wilding reaches the high note in Adele's 'Make You Feel My Love'. Matt Cardle's hopes of moving out of his mum's house are dependant on his next performance, an emotional version of 'The First Time Ever I Saw Your Face'.
