Okoye going on IR if he clears waivers after being cut by San Francisco 49ers

Lawrence Okoye has been waived by the San Francisco 49ers, but the Olympian-turned defensive tackle will be placed on the Injured Reserve list.

If he clears waivers, it is likely that the 22-year-old will make the practice squad.

Okoye tweeted: 'Relax people - I'm going on IR,' soon after the news emerged.

A new beginning: Lawrence Okoye will be placed on Injured Reserve

Okoye featured in all three of the 49ers preseason games so far, playing eight snaps.

After making his NFL bow in the 10-6 defeat to the Denver Broncos, Okoye was seen on crutches in the aftermath of Sunday's 34-14 victory over the Minnesota Vikings with a reported knee injury.

With receivers Michael Crabtree and Mario Manningham placed on the reserve/PUP List, defensive tackles Tank Carradine and Quinton Dial, running back Marcus Lattimore, tackle Luke Marquardt and cornerback Eric Wright are on the reserve/NFI List as the 49ers trimmed their roster to 74 players.
