Men’s soccer wins with last minute goal 1-0 Michael High Staff Writer
The crowd of 756 fans at the ODU Soccer Complex was treated to a gem of a game on Sept. 12. In a game that was full of penalties, fouls, tackles and close calls, ODU midfielder Ryan Condotta scored in the 89th minute, to give the Monarchs a 1-0 lead. The crowd was in frenzy and celebrating as the University of South Florida Bulls took the touch at midfield and pushed down the field in the 90th and final minute. ODU goal keeper, Alex Tiesenhausen, made a final save against the Bulls midfielder Lindo Mfeka, who was in on goal all alone, to preserve the win. When two quality teams face off as ODU and USF did, a tight contest can be expected. The teams did not disappoint, even though ODU carried the play for most of the game. The game was physical from the beginning with three
yellow cards being handed out in the first half. USF was guilty of two, ODU of one. The drama and scoring opportunities were missed by both teams. The first chance came early, when ODU junior forward, Josue Henriquez, had a golden opportunity when he collected a through ball that set him up for a breakaway. Henriquez chipped the ball over the USF’s goalkeeper, and his attempt went just wide. ODU continued to push forward, allowing USF to get behind their defense for several breakaways, but Tiesenhausen made the necessary saves. USF was unable to put their shots on target as they only had three shots on goal, which allowed ODU to stay in the game. The drama began to build about midway through the second half, which really got the crowd into the game. With just over a minute and a half to go in regulation, ODU pushed forward, an attempted cross was deflected but this time the ball fell right at the right foot of

junior midfielder, Ryan Condotta. Condotta calmly gathered the ball and slipped it just inside the post to beat USF junior goalkeeper, Spasoje Stefanovic, giving ODU the 1-0 lead. “I thought to myself, get in the box and maybe a lucky bounce will happen, and sure enough it fell to me, I took a chest down and slide it home,” Condotta said. As the crowd erupted in cheers, USF took the touch from midfield and went forward with pace. They were able to get past the ODU defense and had a one-on-one with the keeper, and Tiesenhausen made his finest save of the night to preserve the victory. ODU has gotten off to a slow start with losses in two of its first three matches. They lost to two top 25 teams in the University of Virginia, and the University of North Carolina by identical scores of 1-0, before defeating Northeastern by the same score for their first win. Friday night was another tough test as USF is

just outside the top 25. “We played UVA and UNC to start the season, and that had a lot to do with it, but the guys are starting to get used to each other, and finding their identity,” Coach Alan Dawson said. “This is ODU’s second win in a row, and the team hopes to build on it. “We have gained a little momentum and we hope to continue,” he said. With three games left before the Monarchs start Conference USA play, this tough early-season schedule should help prepare the team. “I think it’s going to set us up very well. We want to be playing our best soccer going into conference tournament. The team needs to continue to get better every day in practice, and get better in games we will be ready for conference play,” Dawson said See photos on C1

Former Governor Bob McDonnell found guilty of corruption Adrienne Mayfield Editor-in-Chief Former Virginia Governor Bob McDonnell and wife Maureen were found guilty of conspiracy, and nearly all of the corruption charges brought against them on Sept. 4 in the national and historic case. The former Governor was found guilty on 11 counts of corruption, and the former first lady on nine counts of corruption and one charge of obstruction of justice. Both were found guilty of conspiracy. The jury of seven men and five women announced the verdict after more than a month of testimony from 65 witnesses, and 48 hours of deliberation. “I think that’s justice,” Emily Gorale-
wicz, sophomore, said. “I honestly would have been shocked if they were prosecuted to the full extent of the law, but I didn’t just think that they were going to get off.” The former Governor and his family received the verdict emotionally in the courtroom. Matt Zapotsky of the Washington Post reported that Bob shook violently and there was “outright sobbing” by members of his family. “All I can say is my trust remains in the Lord,” McDonnell said to reporters as he left the courthouse. McDonnell’s family declined to comment on the verdict, except for his niece, Christine Reinaman, who said that the speed and outcome of the verdict took her family by surprise. “He’s a very good man and that’s what needs to be known,” Reinaman said in
a text. In January the former Governor and first lady were served with a 43-page indictment charging them with conspiring to accept illegal gifts and loans from Star Scientific dietary supplement entrepreneur, Jonnie Williams Sr. “Bob and Maureen McDonnell stand accused of trading the prestige of the Governor’s office in exchange for a man who ran a dietary supplement company… He gave them about $177,000 in luxury vacations, gifts and sweetheart loan deals,” Rosalind S. Helderman of the Washington Post reported. These gifts and loans included a $15,000 catering bill for a McDonnell daughter’s wedding, a Rolex for the former Governor and a $20,000 Manhattan shopping spree for the former first lady.
In exchange, the first couple used their influence in subtle ways to support William’s product, Anatabloc. “You can say he’s wrong for what he’s doing, but a lot of politicians are doing it. He’s just the one who got caught,” Mikquan Johnson, a junior, said. The McDonnell’s defense argued that the couple was in a broken marriage and barely speaking, to prove that they could not have conspired together. They also painted Maureen McDonnell as a volatile and emotional dictator in the Governor’s mansion who had a crush on Williams. Several key witnesses, including former aides, supported those claims. Williams testified that he had gifted the former first family with items and loans in an effort to advance Anatabloc.
The former Governor testified that he did not do anything for Williams that he would not do for any other Virginia businessman. Sentencing is set for January. The McDonnell’s defense plans to appeal the verdict with the argument that the judge’s definition of “official acts” was too broad for the jury to make an informed decision, the Washington Post reports. “It kind of shocked me because growing up I seen the vote for Bob McDonnell signs all over my town and once I got of age I actually voted for him because I believed in everything he was saying,” Johnson said. “I think that if he’s the example, then what are they going to do about everyone else who’s doing the same, if not worse than what he’s doing,” he said.
Senator holds healthcare reform town hall Joshua Stanton Staff Writer A town hall meeting regarding healthcare reform took place at Granby High School on Tuesday, Sept. 9. The meeting, sponsored by Virginia State Senator Lynwood W. Lewis Jr., D-VA, of the state’s sixth district, featured a question and answer format with Virginia Secretary of Health and Human Resources, Dr. William Hazel. About 100 citizens from the Norfolk area came to the meeting to voice their concerns and have their questions answered. The main topic of the town hall re-
volved around the expansion of Medicaid in Virginia. According to the New York Times, Governor Terry McAuliffe recently consulted legal experts as to the extent of what he could do to expand Medicaid coverage in the state by executive action. Earlier this year when the governor attempted using a line-item veto to change the state’s budget to expand Medicaid, the measure was shot down in the General Assembly, which is controlled by Republicans in both chambers. As a member of McAuliffe’s cabinet, Secretary Hazel spent the evening advocating on behalf of the governor for the expansion of Virginia’s Medicaid

program. He opined that regardless of any citizen’s political views, the state’s healthcare system needs to be fixed. “It’s important that everyone have some ability to access healthcare… We are one of the most efficient Medicaid systems in the country,” Hazel said. Secretary Hazel stated there are compelling reasons to initiate the expansion of the state’s Medicaid program, such as expanding dental benefits to pregnant women. According to Hazel, research supports better dental care increases the health of the baby a woman is carrying. Hazel went on to talk about how Virginia has re-purposed $4.3 million to de-

velop a website called “Cover VA.” The website will help Virginia residents decide which form of healthcare insurance they should use- whether that be through the federal marketplace, Medicaid, or the Veteran’s Association. According to Kaiser Health News, some states like Minnesota and Montana use Medicaid to help fund students’ college health plans. When asked whether this would be something the state of Virginia would be interested in doing for schools in the commonwealth, Hazel said, “There is no such thing as a state of Virginia that is interested in doing this, but there are a

lot of individuals who collectively have to decide if something like this happens… We would favor the broader expansion of Medicaid to those who do not have the income [to pay for insurance]. We would like to see [college students] have the coverage. The question is how to do that. And there are different ways.” The Virginia General Assembly will go back to session on Sept. 18. A full discussion of Medicaid expansion is expected to take place when the assembly reconvenes.

“Get Your Life” with Tamar Braxton

On Sept. 13 Chrysler Hall was flooded with “Tamartians” ranging from all ages, eager to watch Tamar Braxton do her thing. Many of the fans looked forward to hearing hits such as “The One,” “White Candle” and “Tip Toe.” Music started as the curtains were drawn. Braxton’s dancers hit the stage, with a screen streaming all of Braxton’s

No other T.V, show could live up to a TVMA description better. Since the series premiere in 2008, “Sons of Anarchy” has brought an entirely new perspective to the motorcycle world. With a fan-base varying from preppy 18-year old girls to 40-somethings, SOA has constructed itself into one of the most prolific television series of our time. After all of the intense cliffhangers, crude manipulation and shocking deaths, our fantasy of biker gangbanging must come to an end. On Sept. 10 the two-hour premier of the first episode, titled “Black Widower,” aired at 10 p.m. For old fans, this was a moment of fa-
funniest moments on the American reality series, “Braxton Family Values.” The crowd chanted Braxton’s name ready to see her in action. All black everything, with a hint of red – Braxton hit the stage. She was BEAT, honey! Incorporating the theme colors from her album “Love and War,” and dressed in a form fitting mesh infused top, paired with sequined black shorts, thigh high leather boots and smoking hot red lips.
She came out ready to put on a show starting off with an upbeat performance of “She Did That.” Braxton created a vivid image to go along with her song selections. She sat on a stool and told a story before each selection she performed. First explaining how her husband, Vince, was the only man that could deal with her dramatics and “crack her back like she like.” Their love life is an inspiration for songs like “Prettiest Girl” “White Can-
dle” and “Hot Sugar.” Between racy dance moves and a number of her famous quotes, Braxton put on a high-energy show, with a crowd to match. There was dancing and laughter, in addition to Braxton having a sense of relatability to her fans. Her vocals were on point, never missing a beat. She looked like she had a great time in Norfolk, and she expressed how happy she was to have so much love from her fans in “NorthFolk” (pun intended).
Sons of Anarchy: the final ride
miliarity- nail biting on Tuesdays, hours before show time. Much like past years, there is an abundance of fresh new eyes that have somehow heard SOA is simply the show to watch. It could be your girlfriend saying she wants to watch it with you so she can gaze upon main character Jax Teller, played by Charlie Hunnam. Maybe it’s your best friend, who couldn’t manage to catch every episode on Netflix so you throw jaw-dropping spoilers at him. No matter the case, the fan-base grows, and after “Black Widower” it doesn’t look like it’s slowing down. For those who have no clue about the story, there is no possible way for a brief summarization. Basically, Teller becomes the president of his bike club, Sons of Anarchy. Every season he endures complete and endless hell one way or another. His struggles put him in a position where he looks for bal-

ance in the safety of his club and family. That summarization doesn’t give the show justice, but it gives anyone unaware of it an idea of what it’s like. I don’t intend to completely deconstruct the first episode of this year, but a solid recap seems necessary, and will keep all of us on the edge of our seats for next Tuesday. **WARNING: THE NEXT FOUR PARAGRAPHS CONTAINS SPOILERS** After the heart-pounding finale of last season, we find Jax back in prison for accusations of murdering his wife Tara (when we really know Jax’s mother murdered her). Jax is beating up an inmate and then carves a swastika into him. He gives the teeth of that inmate to Marilyn Manson’s creepy inmate character and gains prison respect. Great start right? There was no evidence of Jax committing the murder, so he is released

and rides back home with his psychotic mother Gemma (the real murderer). His mother and the club provide comfort for his tragic loss. The only thing on Jax’s mind is vengeance for his wife. He and his club do some investigating among other bike clubs. While investigating, Jax manages to squash some beef amongst the other clubs. After this imaginary “peace treaty” they invite the Chinese (another connection the Sons work with) to a decadent welcome-home party for Jax. Gemma, being the great woman she is, sees a lonely Chinese man sitting at the table. She asks him if he has any family (hmmm), which he doesn’t. She then goes to Jax and tells him when she drove by Tara’s house the night she was murdered, she caught a good eye of that man leaving. She told Jax she was certain it was him. Now Jax was told once, “for a man

After the show Braxton held an after party at the Granby Theater located in Downtown Norfolk. Awaiting her arrival, fans enjoyed drinks, music and the overall atmosphere of the theater. When she arrived she greeted a few of her fans and enjoyed the closing of her time here in the 757. It was definitely an experience worth having, so if you missed it… GET YO LIFE!
who knows the importance of family, he should also know more violence will destroy what’s left of it.” I’m pretty sure that went in one ear, and right out the other. In conclusion, this poor innocent man was severely tortured by Jax, and the grand finale included a kitchen utensil right through the back of the skull (sort of how Tara received it)—episode over. Now I’m no fortuneteller, but I’m pretty sure this season is going to be filled with a lot more of this. SOA writer Kurt Sutter has mastered the art of delivering shock to his audience. Sutter’s abundance of dynamic characters continues to change. Change is what we love. This is it people. This is the final showdown. SOA will go down in the books for a show packed with the baddest SOBs…ever.

Threats of flooding didn’t keep an enthusiastic group of fans from crowding under their tent, dancing and clapping for the indiepop band. The show wasn’t Bombadil’s first appearance in Hampton Roads – in the past they have played Taphouse, and will begin a short tour with Chesapeake’s the Last Bison on Sept. 30. Traveling with a herd like the Bison, Michalak said, “We are a herd of avocados.”

Christian Cabigas: Morphsuit America unmasked Adrienne Mayfield Editor-in-Chief
Old Dominion University sophomore Christian Cabigas, 19, went viral with a video of his flash flood backwards shuffle on Kaufman Mall on Sept. 8. The video was shot by Maria Creamer, 22, the Mace & Crown’s arts and entertainment editor. Creamer assembled the video on iMovie and posted it to the Mace and Crown’s Facebook page. From there it was shared by AltDaily, Hamptonroads. com, the ODU Facebook page, the Daily Press and News Channel 3. The article featuring the video is currently ranked as AltDaily’s number two most read article of all time with over 3,000 likes, and was the most viewed story at News Channel 3 for Sept. 9. “I was just fooling around,” Cabigas said. “I didn’t think it would go viral, but seeing it explode and people sharing it, I’m like ‘Oh my God.’ I am just speechless.” In the comment section of the AltDaily article another student claimed to be the dancer in the video. Cabigas was confirmed as the dancer by ODU student Ivan Trent, 26, who said he lent Cabigas the jacket he was wearing in the video. Cabigas, who goes by the moniker “Morphsuit America,” dances in his star spangled outfit in front of the Webb Center three to five times a week. He is part of the organization LECo (Live Entertainment Culture Organization), whose members include any type of artist who enjoys performing live. “It’s great to be part of LECo. The fact that we can have an organization that welcomes people with artistic, performance and musical talent really drew me to them in the first place. Being able to collaborate with like-minded students gives me
inspiration and drive to do what I love,” said Austin Rich, 23. Rich is a member of LECo and a dancer on Cabigas’ team, the Anonymous Crew. Cabigas and his team are free-stylers who fuse techniques like hip-hop, breakdancing, dub step and classic dance moves into unique styles. “For a free-styler, if you see something interesting… you can pick it up yourself,” he said. He bought his morphsuit at Party City. It originated at Denbigh High School where Cabigas was the patriotic icon at pep rallies. When he came to ODU he was told he couldn’t wear the facemask portion of his morphsuit because he wasn’t part of an organization. Shortly after that he joined LECo as their first dancer. Other members include musicians, actors and painters. Part of LECo’s aim is to teach students outside of the organization how to participate in live performances. Cabigas gives mini dance lessons to anyone who asks, and trades moves in dance battles with other performers. That is how he met Michael Mathewson, 18, his best friend and a fellow LECo member. Mathewson said he’d seen Cabigas in his morphsuit talking with friends on campus. His first impression was that Cabigas was weird, but when he saw him dancing a few days later his view changed. “I saw him dancing and I was immediately drawn to it because it was just so out there. Literally translated from Brazilian Portuguese it means “Capoeira for all.” What: Rooted in Afro-Brazilian martial arts, acrobatics and dance, the cultural expression or game includes two players that aim to move with one another. During every game, each individual develops their own style and unique combinations. FreeFall Fest may prove to be ultimate student getaway Sean Davis Copy Editor Nate Budryk Sports Editor contributed to this article Snowshoe Ski Resort’s Second Annual Freefall Fest is set to kick off the season once again with a remarkable lineup of artists including Michael Franti and Spearhead, G Love and Special Sauce and Slightly Stoopid. The festival will alsopremier two extreme sports documentaries, a microbrew festival, mountain biking and yoga- with or without Michael Franti. While a ski resort in West Virginia may seem like an exorbitant distance for college students that live near the beach to travel, Snowshoe is an easy five-hour drive- a little over what some
students take to get home. And here’s the kicker: what Freefall costs in gas, it more than makes up for in cost. A two-day music pass costs an easy $60. Camping for four to stay Thursday through Sunday is only $90. So basically, don’t buy booze or any other illicit substances for a week, and you and your friends can get out of town and see some killer music with a backdrop of beautiful, color changing West Virginia mountains. San Francisco-based vocalist, Franti, announced on YouTube in April that the band would be kicking off a 35stop tour of fingerpicking and crouching lotuses (Loti?). “In every city we’re going to be starting it off with an amazing yoga session with acoustic music,” he said in the YouTube
video. At Freefall, the session will be from 2 p.m. - 3 p.m. on Friday, and is BYOM (bring your own mat). The band is set to play at 8 p.m. that evening. Franti, the old-enough-to-be-yourdad-but-still-rocking-respectably vocalist, and his band have utilized a diverse pallet of musical styles from quiet acoustic guitars to upbeat funk, and reggae derivatives to poignant hip hop numbers. Material from the group’s over a dozen albums have also covered a wide range of topics from ballads about love and acceptance to discontented protest songs about war, racism, the environment and poverty. Lyrics such as “You can bomb the world to pieces/ you can’t bomb it to peace” from 2003’s “Bomb the World” remain painfully relevant over a decade
later, just days after the president announced bombings in Syria and Iraq. Philadelphia-based G Love and Special Sauce also present a myriad of musical flavors from Beastie Boys-esque noisy hip hop to, at times, legitimately respectable blues. The group released its latest album, Sugar, in April commemorating two decades since their entrance to the airwaves and to the ears of people that like music that isn’t good. Working alongside the likes of bands like Sublime, Saturday headliner, Slightly Stoopid, worked from their inception to establish the unique style of Southern Californian rock, incorporating elements of funk, hip-hop and punk, with pervasive reggae basslines, percussion and lyrics. For many, including this author, the highlight of the festival will be Saturday’s
“Microbrew Bonanza” which promises the best craft beers from around the region. The festival also offers outdoor activities including hiking, bike jousting and riding segues through the woods as well as competitions including mountain bike races and diving/high-jumping dogs. West Virginia may be more wellknown for gritty country music and blue grass than reggae, hip hop funk, but Freefall Fest promises enough granola and hemp necklaces to make any longboarder ODU student feel right at home. It’s definitely the most Namaste thing the state ever seen.
Book review: “Fangirl” Dacia McBride Staff Writer Let’s take a dive into a world that has been opened up and examined heavily in recent times - a world where fictional universes collide in ways that excite fans and supporters all around. What world am I referring to? The wonderful world of fan fiction. “Fangirl” was written by Rainbow Rowell in 2013. The book is about twin sisters, Cather and Wren. When they grow up and enter university, Wren decides she wants to be more independent
and separate herself from Cather a bit. Cather then begins to spend more time alone and focus on writing her fan fiction. Both Cather and Wren are extremely passionate about Simon Snow novels, and even wrote fan fiction about it together when they were younger. However, now that the two are older and in college, Wren has shied away from it, while Cather happily continues falling deeper into it. It’s easy to identify with both Cather and Wren when it comes to starting college and finding yourself. For people like Cather who prefer to do the things that make them most happy instead of branch-
ing out at times, college can be scary. With so many options, people, activities and deadlines to meet, it can all get incredibly stressful and frustrating. Cather finds this out when things back at home and school get rough at the same time. For people like Wren who want to start fresh and experience new things, college can be a delightful experience. She discovers that having a twin who doesn’t seem to understand why she is changing and why the things she used to do don’t bring her happiness like they used to, it can get hard. Although it may seem that Cather is
stuck in her ways, or that Wren is trying to change too quickly, both girls experience things while they’re apart that help them come together. Rowell does a fantastic job of depicting what it is like to set foot into a new world with so many opportunities that at times it becomes hard to choose; in this novel the reader gets to follow different paths that show them exactly how it feels for two people with two different personalities. We, the readers, get to travel through the experiences and thoughts of these characters as they fall in love, make
friends, lose friends and ultimately find themselves. If you haven’t read “Fangirl,” I highly recommend you give it a try. Even if you don’t know what fan fiction is, this book will guide you through it all. Also, despite the title, this book is for fangirls and fanboys (obsessive fans of movies, books, science fiction, etc) too. No matter what gender you are, this book will hopefully captivate you and leave you wanting more like it did for me. Happy reading!
Indie movies to watch Eric Barnett Contributing Writer I am not denying that blockbuster films are entertaining, but I don’t want to exclude myself from lesser-known movies. Independent films “or the films that fly “under the radar”) can be as good as those that come out of Hollywood. They are “diamonds in the rough,” and touch on every genre imaginable. Even well-known celebrities appear in them, showing their acting abilities regardless of production costs. Indie films to watch: “Wish I Was Here” Scrubs star Zach Braff shows his serious side in “Wish I Was Here,” an indie film he wrote and produced. He plays a jobless actor and struggling
father, while his wife works a job she hates to help pay the bills. At first their children attend a Jewish private school, paid by his father. Due to his father’s worsening illness he is unable to continue paying, causing the children to be homeschooled. While being homeschooled their father teaches the children about life and happiness, which are the film’s themes. What “Wish I Was Here” did perfectly was blend drama and comedy into one. At one point you are laughing your head off, while at another point, your heart is starting to break. Braff also tips his hat to one of his co-stars on “Scrubs.” You will find out who when you see it. “Chef” A cooking comedy starring Jon Favreau deals with his character, a chef who controls the kitchen of a very popu-

lar restaurant. This restaurant is visited by a well-known and well-respected food critic. The chef wants to make something new, something from the heart, while the restaurant’s owner forces him to cook the same old food. As a result, the food critic writes a negative review, the chef is offended and lashes out at him through Twitter as well as yelling at the food critic after he comes back a second time. The chef then quits. This behavior puts him in a hole because no one wants to hire him. He ends up going to Florida to see his ex-wife and child. There he is re-introduced to the passion of food and cooking, and is given a food truck which he cleans, fixes up and runs a business out of. This story is about a father rekindling his relationship with his son but is also

about how our society and social media go hand in hand. Twitter is extremely popular now and it helps advertise businesses. His son realizes that and uses it to his advantage. The ability to use Twitter is taught to the father, and in return cooking is taught to his son. It is a learning and bonding experience for the both of them. “Begin Again” A down-on-his-luck record label executive, Mark Ruffalo, is fired from his job and self-destructs the only way he knows how; alcohol. While at a bar he hears a woman, Keira Knightley, sing and has an epiphany. He knows that she could become someone rich and famous with the right guidance. She is hesitant at first to agree to his partnership but her decision changes after a bit of coercion. The style of music that he produces

with her is different from the normal, mainstream type of music. It is more down-to-earth, using New York City as their recording booth. Both have been hurt in the past by their significant others and that is what draws them to each other. An added bonus to this film is that it stars two actual rappers, Mos Def and Cee Lo Green, respectively as a successful record label executive and a rapper.

The Ray Rice controversy Jasmine Blackwell Senior Writer Baltimore Ravens running back Ray Rice has lost everything that he worked so hard to gain in his six years in the National Football League (NFL). On Feb. 15 Rice was arrested due to an altercation with his then-fiancée in an Atlantic City elevator. When the first video was released to the public, Commissioner Roger Goodell gave Rice a controversial two-game suspension. This short suspension caused a public uproar, so much so that Goodell had to apologize to owners and then strengthen the league’s policy on domestic violence. “Being a leader is not a part-time job. If Goodell holds the players to a high standard, he should be held to that same high standard,” retired running back Brian Westbrook tweeted. On March 17, Rice was indicted on an aggravated assault charge. “This is part of the due process for Ray. We know there is more to Ray Rice than this one incident,” the Ravens said in a statement shortly following the indictment. In the wake of the criticisms, TMZ released the full surveillance video on Sept.
8. This video showed Rice punching and knocking out Janay Palmer. Throughout the offseason, the Ravens, including head coach John Harbaugh, had been very vocal in their support of Rice. “He will be part of our team,” Harbaugh said. “He’s a person of character.” It was only after the full surveillance video released by TMZ had gone viral that the Baltimore Ravens decided to announce that the team would cut the veteran running back. “Ray Rice didn’t get released because of what he did. He got released [because] the video went public. Ravens backed him loudly ‘til that point,” Dave Hyde of the Sun Sentinel tweeted. Rice has lost a number of endorsements deals since the incident including Nike, Dick’s Sporting Goods, Modell’s and Madden. The Baltimore Ravens have announced that the team will give fans the opportunity to exchange Rice jerseys at its stadium stores on Sept. 19 and Sept 20 at M&T Bank Stadium. Shortly after the Ravens announcement, the NFL suspended Rice indefinitely. “This video shows a starkly different sequence of events from what you and your representatives stated when we met on June 16,” Goodell wrote, “and [it] is
important new information that warrants reconsideration of the discipline imposed on you in July.” ESPN’s “Outside the Lines” cited four sources reporting that in that June meeting Rice told Goodell that he did in fact punch Palmer in the elevator. The NFL has repeatedly said that despite requests it could not obtain the full video of Rice punching and knocking out
Palmer last February, and had not seen it until it was released by TMZ on Sept. 8. A source told the Associated Press that law enforcement had certainly sent the tape to an NFL Executive in April. The source played the Associated Press a voicemail from an NFL office number on April 9 that confirms the video had arrived. “You’re right. It’s terrible,” the female voice said after expressing thanks.
An independent investigation has been launched looking into exactly what the NFL knew and when they knew it. Former FBI director Robert S. Mueller III will conduct the investigation. “Ignorance is not an excuse,” Goodell said to the New Orleans Saints regarding the bounty scandal. As the investigation is ongoing, those are words that Goodell may soon regret.
Lady Monarchs suffer another close loss Matt O’Brien Staff Writer No. 17 Old Dominion field hockey took on No. 4 Duke Sept. at the L.R. Hill sports complex. Despite outshooting the Blue Devils and not allowing a single shot in the second half, ODU fell 1-0. This marks the fifth straight game decided by a goal for the Lady Monarchs. “Overall it was the most consistent 70 minutes so far this season. I was happy with the team’s effort. They did everything we asked them to do. We controlled the flow of the game. We dominated the game to put it simply,” Coach Andrew Griffiths said.
Captain Kelsey Smithers said she knows this team is doing the right things through all of these hard-fought games. “The past couple weekends we have been doing everything we are supposed to be doing. It’s definitely a little frustrating. Our press is good. We are getting opportunities, we are just not capitalizing on them,” Smithers said. The two teams were practically deadlocked through the first half. Each team was only able to tally one shot on goal but in minute 33 the Blue Devils made theirs count. Defender Hannah Barreca scored the lone goal off a penalty corner. “Those things happen. It was kind of a lucky deflection. Sometimes those go
your way sometimes they don’t. It wasn’t a mistake on our part specifically,” Griffiths said. Going into halftime, Griffith’s message to his player remained much of the same. The Lady Monarchs did not show any signs of letting up. “We stuck to the game plan because it was working. We were moving the ball well and really just had to focus on finishing out those last 35 minutes,” Smithers said. ODU Field hockey then proceeded to have arguably their most impressive half of the season. The Lady Monarchs had five shots on goal to Duke’s one. They were also able to rack up four more pen-
alty corners in the second half. Griffiths gave a lot of credit to the play of Duke Goalkeeper Lauren Blazing. “Solid goalkeeper. We had talked about really needing to cash in on rebounds and attacking the far posts, she just didn’t allow us to do so,” he said. Offensively, ODU generated a lot of close chances in the last five minutes of the contest, nearly cashing in on a penalty corner that was met by Blazing. It is only the second time this season that they have been held scoreless. “We are making a lot of the right strides, just a little unlucky with shots wide and not hitting the far posts. It just has to click and come together for us and
it will,” Smithers said. The team takes on Monmouth next week and then it is on to in-conference games for the Lady Monarchs. Smithers and the rest of her teammates know the importance of those games. “Those are huge for us moving forward. We just need to keep working hard and continue the hard play that we had today,” she said. Even with a slow start, spirits are high and Coach Griffiths has a lot of faith in his team moving forward. “It’s simple- keep getting better. We are already playing at a high level so if we keep playing our game we will be dangerous down the stretch.”
Limitless: Carlos Lopez Villa Mitchell Brown Senior writer When the ball gets hoisted in the air and the racket swings back at full force, the crowd drops silent in anticipation of magic. Ask any Old Dominion athletics followers to describe Carlos Lopez Villa and they would give you a concise answer; “He’s a beast”. Lopez Villa is 38-2 in the last two seasons, captured the second regional singles crown in school history, and has been nationally ranked throughout the duration of both seasons. When the lanky 6’4” Spaniard stepped on campus, he wasn’t sure how college tennis would work and he didn’t know what the American campus experience would be like. What he was certain of was his work ethic and his desire to become one of the best tennis players ODU has ever witnessed. “I think since I came here I’ve gotten a lot of experience. Everything was new, I had a new team, and I didn’t really know how college tennis worked. I enjoyed
my experience so far these three years, everyone has supported me a lot,” he said. Early on in his ODU career, Lopez Villa went through some growing pains. He would complete his freshman singles season at 13-8 but would post a 20-4 doubles mark, which landed him on the 2nd Team All-CAA Doubles list. He credits his growth to the predecessors that mentored him when he first came in. “Since I’ve come here, I’ve been trying to learn from other top tennis players. I learned from [Krzysztof] Muzalewski, who was a captain during my freshman year. Also Albert Ochagavia who was a captain in my sophomore year and I’ve been learning from them and they’ve given me skills that I can take into account right now being the only senior on the team,” he said. The Monarchs welcomed seven freshmen onto the team while Lopez Villa is the lone four-year player. Over the summer, he was named the sole 2014 recipient of the ITA Arthur Ashe Jr. Leadership and Sportsmanship Award for the entire Atlantic region.

Opponents have always had a problem getting the ball past Lopez Villa and his 6’4” frame, partly because of his footwork and athleticism. “When I was younger I used to go play soccer with my brother and friends in the morning, go to the swimming pool for a little and then go play basketball; these are the sports I used to play before tennis,” he said. He wasn’t always the cream of the crop in tennis but he cited all the training days and focus he put into it is what he got out. “I started training three days a week, getting better and better, then practicing some more, started playing some more tournaments, and then I got better and that’s when I knew I loved tennis”. Life for Lopez Villa on the court is tough, but off the court is even more of a battle. When he doesn’t have practice or a weekend tournament, he’s usually working towards his expected 2015 graduation date. A double major in finance and economics, Lopez Villa made the Conference USA All-Academic team for the second consecutive year.

“I just try to do my best tennis wise and academic wise. It definitely means a lot to me, being recognized not just by the school, but from the whole country getting an All-American award definitely means a lot to me and I hope to bring some more of those awards in,” he said. Over the past three seasons, Lopez Villa has noticeably changed the way he plays. His aggressiveness pays off more times than not, and his ability to cover the length of the court the way he does makes for a tough opponent. Without Head Coach Aljosa Piric, who has always been a player’s coach, Lopez Villa doesn’t know where his game would be. “Since I got here I think Aljosa was on top of me all the time. He taught me so many things on and off the court. He was one of the reasons why I improved my game so much. When I came here, I used to play pretty far back behind the baseline, and he told me how to step up on the court, how to take the ball early, how to close more points at the net, and that’s what got my game to a level where

I could beat some good players,” Lopez Villa said. After graduation, Lopez Villa plans to get a job working with numbers, since he enjoys crunching them. “My plan is still hopefully going back to Spain. I’m getting a job over there but the economy isn’t that good over there right now. I’m going to have to stay here a few years and get experience and then go back, but my main plan is definitely going back home,” he said. With the fall season about to commence, Lopez Villa knows that he can make moves to eclipse the No. 30 ranking he achieved during last season’s nine game singles winning streak. “I don’t really set up any specific goal for my self. I always would like to become as good as I can be and as high as possible in the rankings. I just look forward to getting better and better and hopefully the ranking improves, if it doesn’t, bad luck, but I will definitely do my best,” he said. Defense shines as ODU wins first home FBS game Alexander Brooks Contributing Writer
Old Dominion played their first game as an FBS team in S.B. Ballard Stadium against the Eastern Michigan Eagles on Sept. 13. Not even the rain could deter fans from showing up in numbers to support the Monarchs and watch as they tried to get their first FBS home win. It has been a week since the Old Dominion Monarchs made a trip to North Carolina to lose a close battle against N.C. State by 12- a reasonable margin to lose by for a first year FBS team, against a highly renowned ACC conference team. Taylor Heinicke came into the game against the EMU Eagles only two touchdowns away from tying Russell Wilson at 14th in career passing touchdowns. He was also only 391 yards away from moving into 22nd place in career passing yards. Unfortunately, Heinicke did not make a lot of headway towards these records, only throwing for 187 with zero touchdowns. If someone was to tell the fans, who split the stadium with blue and white, that Heinicke was going to throw for under 200 yards and no touchdowns, they would rebut that the Monarchs would be coming out of that game with a loss. However, that was not the case on that rainy Saturday night. Early on, it was obvious that Heinicke would not be having his usual 300-yard, three touchdown game when he threw a lollipop of a pass over the middle, and had it picked off with ease by Eastern Michigan’s senior defensive back Kevin
Johnson. It was only Heinicke’s second attempted pass. Eastern Michigan decided that they were going to attack the Monarch’s rushing defense, which had been struggling, giving up 126 rushing yards on average to the opposing runningbacks, by running eight run plays before passing the ball for the first time, which fell incomplete. It took 12 minutes and 50 seconds to get their first completion, for only three yards. EMU was forced to punt, and from the way it was looking it appeared to be a low scoring affair. Old Dominion ran three plays for only nine yards, which led them to go for it on fourth down, which they converted. The Monarchs were chipping away against the front line of the Eagles with runs going for three to five yards before the freshman, Ray Lawry, broke off a massive run for 55 yards and the first score of the game. This was also Lawry’s longest career run. Fans of the Monarchs had to embrace that scoring drive as they would not see another one for a long while - 35 minutes and six seconds to be exact. Old Dominion started the majority of their drives within their own 20 yard line, starting on their own one yard line twice, due to the leg of Eastern Michigan’s punter Austin Dubiels. They also relied on the leg of their kicker, Dylan Mulder, to score the only points of the game from the Eastern Michigan Eagles on a 43 yard field goal, which tied his career long. On the other side of the field, Heinicke was the main punter for Old Dominion, like usual. Even though he throws right

handed, he punted the ball a great distance - 66 yards, a career long - with his left foot. Ricky Segers, the redshirt sophomore kicker, hit his first career field goal from 26 yards out. EMU’s offense looked stagnant until 11 seconds left in the third quarter, when they put in their senior quarterback, Rob Bolden, who added a spark to the Eagles offense. It was too little too late, as he ended the game with 42 rushing yards, but only 16 yards passing. Old Dominion’s defense played out of character in a good way, only giving up 215 total offensive yards. Compare that to 455 total offensive yards they were giving up on average in their previous two games. They also had a record-breaking day, only giving up three points, the least amount of points they have given up since they reestablished the football program in 2009. They also forced five fumbles throughout the entirety of the game, but only capitalized on two of the five. Coach Bobby Wilder said after the game, “Our defense, which has been the object of so much criticism, won this game.” Eastern Michigan’s defense played very well compared to their previous two games, forcing two turnovers, one fumble and an early game interception. The defense of the Eagles kept them in the game until 7:28 when the momentum shifted and stayed with the Monarchs. Antonio Vaughan had the play of the game with a 46 yard punt return capitalizing on his elusiveness and nimble footwork along the edge of the field before cutting it inside and taking to the house.

“I knew I’d get a chance… We needed a big play at that point,” Vaughan said after the game. His touchdown sealed the deal for the Monarchs, and secured the victory. Next week, the Old Dominion Monarchs will be traveling to Houston to take

on the Rice Owls, who are 0-2, but those two losses have come against ranked opponents, Notre Dame and Texas A&M. This will be a big test for Wilder and the Monarchs to assert themselves, showing they belong in the FBS playing with the big boys.

Watch out for Apple’s latest peripheral
Victoria Wood Staff Writer Apple CEO Tim Cook elated fans when he stole a line from Steve Jobs’ own book and announced he had “one more thing” to show the audience at Apple’s keynote on Sept. 9 before unveiling the Apple Watch. Three versions of the iconic new Apple device are estimated to be released in 2015: the Apple Watch, Apple Watch Sport, and the more fashionable Apple Watch Edition. Each of the three watches comes with a sapphire crystal touch display, a variety of customizable watch bands and a detail that will set the Apple Watch apart from its competitors: the Digital Crown. The Digital Crown allows the wearer to manipulate the watch screen without touching it, controlling both the zoom and scroll functions. It operates as a home button as well, and is key to navigating the watch fluidly. The Apple Watch comes with a variety of apps programed to work with the smaller screen as well. Facebook, Pinterest and other apps have their own tiny stamps on a kaleidoscopic home screen. By clicking the app, a barebones yet incredibly detailed version of the app appears displaying all of one’s updates. When communicating with other Apple Watch users, the wearer can use a variety of direct touch options via the screen. The Apple Watch comes with a new Taptic feedback feature, designed to get the wearer’s attention without alerting those in the immediate area. Tech Crunch reporter Michael Panzarino described the sensation as a gentle touch that would get your attention without being too distracting. For those with professors that penalize alerts in class,
the Taptic response will keep one in the loop without distracting one’s peers. The Health and Apple Pay options are both incorporated into the Apple Watch as well. The back of the watch houses four sensors designed to gauge one’s pulse, heart rate, and other motion factors. The response is a real time connection between the user and the Health apps readouts. The Apple Watch also has near field communication antennae in the device that are designed to allow the user to swipe their watch at NFC scanners to pay, rather than taking out their iPhone. The three versions of the watch are designed for three different types of consumers; the tech guru, the athlete, and the fashionista. For the tech junkie, the Apple Watch is the best match. With a stainless steel frame, the watch is sleek but can be changed to meet a variety of tastes through choices in faces, watch size and watch bands. The athlete will be sure to grab the Apple Watch Sport, as its lightweight alloy and silicone design ensure a snug fit with all the tech benefits of the Apple watch. For the fashionista, the Apple Watch Edition will be a showstopper. In rose gold and yellow gold, the Edition comes with a variety of different options such as rich leather bands, customized colored digital crowns, silicone band options for workouts and multiple faces. The watch faces on the Apple Watch allow for a variety of customizing options as well, from a simple face change to a widget-centric option specific just to the wearer’s needs. As Apple Senior Vice President Jony Ive explained in the keynote, the Apple Watch was meant to be a purely personal device; it’s as personable as one wants to make it.

An Apple launch that we can sink our teeth into Victoria Wood Staff Writer Sept. 9 marked the date of Apple’s 2014 Mobile Device launch. This year’s announcement was far more packed then the previous year’s keynote due to the arrival of not only the iPhone 6 and the iPhone 6 Plus, but Apple Watch as well. Apple will be releasing the Apple Watch in 2015 and both iPhones on Sept. 19. Pre-order for the phones was opened on the Sept.12. The response to the preorder opportunity was so great that the Apple Store site was down for two hours after opening the reservation service. The price for an iPhone 6 starts at $199 with the iPhone 6 Plus starting at $299. The smaller iPhone 6 comes equipped with a 4.7-inch Retina HD display with a resolution of 1334 by 750 pixels. This resolution upgrade is still a noticeable improvement from the previous year’s model, the 5S, which had an 1136 by 640 resolution and a 4-inch screen. The iPhone 6 Plus is a behemoth by comparison to the 5S. Apple’s introduction into the world of small tablet-sized phones, or phablets, has a 5.5-inch screen. The resolution of the screen for the 6 Plus
is 1920 by 1080. The iPhone 6 and 6 Plus screens will continue to be made from Gorilla Glass, but the screen cover on the Touch ID pad and the camera lens are sapphire crystal to prevent users from scratching these delicate areas. As far as processing speed is concerned, the iPhone 6 and 6 Plus will be noticeably faster due to their new A8 processor. Apple included in their keynote that the chip is 25 percent faster than their previous model, the A7. The change in graphics speed on the iPhone 6 is even better. If the estimate is true, then the chip will be 50 percent faster on graphic intensive apps such as gaming or movie streaming apps. The 6 and 6 Plus also sport longer battery lives thanks to new upgrades. For those worried about larger screens meaning lower battery life, the iPhones were able to receive larger batteries due to the bigger cases this year. To usher in a new era in iPhones, Apple also performed a complete overhaul of iOS for their eight version. With a new landscape mode, updates in usability from the messaging app and better predictive text, using the iPhone for day-to-day

tasks will be a breeze. The most notable change to iOS 8 will be made available in early 2015 with the release of Apple Pay. A continuation of their previous release in 2013, Passbook, Apple Pay will allow users to store all credit cards directly to a secure chip inside your phone. Once stored, the chip will provide a secure code for Apple pay vendors to be given through the near field communication chips in the new iPhones, so that users simply have to swipe their phones at participating stores to perform transactions. The introduction of the security code also ensures that your credit card information cannot be viewed by the vendors or employees. Apple has also initiated a new directive to become a health conscious company. To support the many health based apps on the market, including their own, Apple took the opportunity to update many of the iPhone’s motion sensors as well. With the new M8 motion processing chip, the iPhones will have the usual gyroscopes and accelerometers, but the updates to the motion monitoring will allow it to more accurately record the user’s motion. One of the most notable changes in the M8 chip is that the iPhones will be

able to gauge one’s general body position as well as elevation for those that enjoy the Rocky-esque work outs up seven or eight flights of stairs. The cameras on the 6 and 6 Plus have been updated for photography buffs as well as videographers. The new phones will house an updated 8-megapixel camera with iSight technology. The camera will have 1.5µ pixels, an updated sensor and an aperture of ƒ/2.2. In addition, the great minds at Apple also incorporated image-specific focus pixels into the onboard camera. Until recently, focus pixels were only incorporated into digital SLR cameras. The changes to the camera ensure professional quality photos in all lights with the greatest of ease. Both the iPhone 6 and 6 Plus will have image signal processors onboard the A8 chips, but the 6 Plus will also come with Optical Image Stabilization. videos in both 240 frames per second and 120 frames per second. The NFC antenna was not the only new antenna to grace the iPhone 6 and 6 Plus. The WiFi antennas have been upgraded to 802.11ac antennas for better speed. Also, the LTE support has increased from 4G LTE data support to VoLTE (Voice over LTE) as well, providing voice calls with the added clarity of a wide band audio feed. The public’s response to pre-ordering the devices may signal a larger issue with overall supplies of the iPhone 6. According to a report from Digitimes, “Barring the occurrence of component shortages and low yield rates, shipments of the iPhone 6s should be able to reach 10 million units by the end of September and total 60 to 70 million in the fourth quarter, the sources estimated.” An estimate of 10 million iPhones available in September will lead to quite a lot of backorders. In 2013, the 5C and 5S sold 9 million units alone on their opening weekend. That said, if Apple is able to ramp up production to over 60 million in the fourth quarter, the wait times will could short lived.

Destiny has won the title of most successful launch for a new game franchise with Activision reporting sales figures of $500 million.
Destiny: The dawn of a new generation Eric Lundgren Contributing Writer Creator of the Halo series, Bungie, released their most recent game on Sept 9, revealing the new face of next generation gaming with “Destiny,” a first person shooter with role-playing and massively multiplayer online (MMO) characteristics. The premise of “Destiny” surrounds the Traveler, a sphere in the earth’s orbit that brought humanity into the Golden Age, a time of limitless exploration and immortality. But the Traveler, as well as all who lived in its prosperity, was consumed by a force called the darkness, within which came forth various races of aliens and robots that mounted a swift and powerful invasion of our solar system. There is only one city on earth left for players: the Tower. The Tower sits below what is left of the Traveler and provides a safe haven for all players - Guardians – of the last civilization. Players must fight the
darkness surrounding the solar system as they move through planets littered with post-apocalyptic civilizations to conquer the worlds around them. The PlayStation 4 exclusive alpha testing for “Destiny” was released as a redeemable code in mid-June, and included a few incomplete levels as well as access to the Tower. However, when PS4 beta testing began in mid-July, Bungie had fleshed the game out considerably. The graphic resolution improved, and new levels were added. The level cap was set at eight for beta testers, allowing users to get a taste of the game before the September reveal. “Destiny’s” 1080p resolution coupled with the highly developed landscape of each planet results in almost hyper realistic graphics. Real-world occurrences, such as the creation of shadows or the glare from the sun, have been programmed into “Destiny’s” software in a manner that challenges any existing nextgen game. But the graphics of the in-game engine are simply not comparable to the game’s elaborate cut scenes, which gener-
ate images of your customized Guardian instead of default character moldings. The plethora of customization options for each Guardian makes for a completely unique experience for each player. There are three races in “Destiny”: Human, Awoken, and Exo. In the process of creating a character, gender, facial features and skin color can be changed to practically whatever the user wants. Also customizable is the Sparrow, a levitating vehicle specific to each Guardian for he or she to travel between planets, the Ghost, every Guardian’s companion, and the symbol shown beside player’s names. One of the most surprising aspects of “Destiny” is the controls. On the next generation consoles, the controls are similar to other first person shooter games, making it easier to adapt to gameplay. With a variety of powers and abilities given to each Guardian by the Traveler, one would think that controlling a character would be highly complex, but Bungie has condensed the button layout for a simpler experience. The player menu also takes
on a much simpler form by relying on the left analog stick to browse the character’s armor and weapons as opposed to the directional pad, which creates a smooth flow within the menus. “Destiny’s” open world and high level of player interaction has been particularly heralded by gamers. “The thing I like most about “Destiny” is the seamless transition from being alone to being in a group. You could stumble across some Guardians fighting on the moon or see no one the whole time. It really gives you the feeling that you’re rediscovering the solar system,” said Bradley Scott from Hampton. In the open world, players cannot engage in player versus player combat. To compensate, “Destiny” includes PvP exclusive maps in an entirely separate realm called the Crucible. In the Crucible, Bungie has done something that no other MMO related game has been able to do: truly place players on a level playing field when entering a match. Advanced weapons and armor
will not do a Guardian much good in the realm of PvP, as their stats are decreased in order to fight fairly amongst other players. With the decreased stats, players depend less on levels and armor and more on personal skill to win matches. It seems that Bungie’s newest game has lived up to its hype and given players exactly what they wanted. Though it’s been in the works for three years, the finished product has been worth the wait. On the night of its release, “Destiny” accrued $500 million dollars in sales, and the numbers have yet to show signs of slowing. After a release of a game so colossal, many players consider the next generation of gaming officially here. “When I first started the game, I had doubts about how well it could actually preform. But after my time played, Bungie has made me a believer. This is the next big thing,” said Preston Gibbs, Woodbrige.
Fall fever? In the upcoming months, gamers can expect a heap of releases just in time for fall. So get ready to set aside those cardigans and pumpkin spice lattes and get ready to pick up a controller. Coming to Nintendo’s uber popular handheld system, the 3DS, is the beat ‘em up brawler, “Super Smash Bros 3DS” on Oct 3. Players can expect over 40 characters, each with their own play styles, strengths, and weaknesses. Earlier this
month, Nintendo also announced a new 3DS, aptly named the New 3DS, that will support the Amiibo system. “Super Smash Bros 3DS” will take advantage of this system, with several Smash character figures on the horizon. Fans of the “LittleBigPlanet” franchise can rejoice for the third installment this fall. Bringing back all of the fun of the previous two titles, “LittleBigPlanet 3” will feature three playable characters. Along with Sackboy, the series mascot, players will get to know Oddsack and Toggle, each of which has special abilities for unique gameplay. “LittleBigPlanet 3” will go on sale Nov 18 for the PlayStation 4. Now for the first time, all of the “Halo” titles have been collected and turned into a single title: “Halo The Master Chief Collection.” Along with the previously released titles of the franchise, “The Master Chief Collection” will feature access to the playable beta of “Halo 5.” This title will be available Nov 11 for the Xbox One. Combining the fast paced action of “Dynasty Warriors” with the iconic characters of the “Legend of Zelda,” “Hyrule Warriors” for the Wii U will be the first of its kind for Nintendo. Princess, and many more. Fans of either game franchise are sure to love the thrill of pitting Link against scores of enemies in this title releasing Sept 26. With “Destiny” already making waves in the gaming community, Activision is set to corner the market one more time this fall. Set for release on Nov 4, “Call of Duty: Advanced Warfare” will be the latest and, if all the hype and trailers can be believed, the greatest in the “CoD” franchise. Set in the near future, “Advanced Warfare” centers on soldiers equipped with exosuits that provide superhuman abilities. For the campaign mode, Kevin Spacey has been enlisted to bring his talent and credentials to the game as the

president of a private military firm. The multiplayer is set to be more fast paced and exciting than ever before. The exosuits offer a completely different take on “CoD’s” run, shoot, and hide play style. Jumps will be higher, some weapons won’t require reloading, and each exosuit can be customized with different abilities, such as a force shield. So mark those calendars and start saving up, players. Because after all, what better way to start off the season than with the gift of a new game?

Nintendo’s Smashstream Symmion Moore Staff Writer Nintendo recently held an eight hour livestream showing off a few upcoming games including “Captain Toad: Treasure Trackers,” “Ultimate NES Remix,” “Hyrule Warriors,” “Bayonetta 2,” “Fantasy Life,” and the title everyone was waiting for, “Super Smash Bros.” for 3DS. Nintendo spent the most time showcasing their upcoming fighter. The game on the 3DS runs at 60 frames per second and makes full use of the 3D feature the handheld is known for. Gameplay is the same as the previous entries: up to four players pick from a roster of Nintendo (and a few third-party) characters, select one of the many iconic stages in Nintendo history, and duke it out until someone wins. The livestream event showed off and
detailed the various game modes and new features. Exclusive to the 3DS version of the game is the game mode, Smash Run, in which players, before a match, are given five minutes to run around an open environment while defeating enemies such as Shy Guys and Mettaurs. Defeating enemies as well as exploring will give players stat bonuses for their upcoming match. Stat bonuses may increase overall defense, movement speed, attack power and even how high they can jump. For those that prefer certain background music (BGM) such as “Live and Learn” from “Sonic Adventure 2” or “Gourmet Race” from “Kirby’s Super Star” there is now an option to choose what music plays during Smash Run. Classic mode also makes a return to the series but this time instead of a linear path, there are now branching paths and adjustable difficulties. The difficulty sys-

tem however isn’t just the simple “I want to play on hard.” Players from the start can wager their coins. The more coins they wager the higher the difficulty will increase. Win classic mode and you get those coins, as well as whatever else you won back. Lose and all of those coins are gone. The branching paths when encountered are split into three and are color coded as well. Red is a tough challenge, blue is normal, and green is easy. Stadium, which hosts familiar minigames such as the Home-Run Contest and Multi-Man Smash, returns as well with a new mode called Target Blast. In Target Blast players are given a bomb and a multitude of targets on the other side of the screen. Players must do enough damage in a 10-second time period and send the bomb flying into the targets where it will effectively blow up

along with the targets around them. The amount of damage the bomb has as well as where players hit it determines how far and where it will go to. Winning these mini-games entitles the player to coins which are used to acquire unlockables and sometimes trophies. All-Star mode, previously an unlockable game mode, is now available from the start. The difference between this version and the others is that because it is available from the get go, players will only fight the characters they have unlocked. This game can be played cooperatively with another friend or a complete stranger. The newest feature to the game overall is the ability to customize your fighter. Customization options include the stat boosters shown in Smash Run but also the ability to change the moves of a character. A player can change, for instance, Sa-

The drawback to this feature is that it will only be able to work offline with friends or the computer, and online but only with friends. As an added bonus, during the livestream the hosts announced that platinum members of Club Nintendo should be getting an email that contains four codes for a special demo of the game while the demo for everyone else will comes out Sept. 19. The demo comes with five playable characters; Mario, Link, Pikachu, Mega Man, and the villager from “Animal Crossing.” One stage is available called Battlefield. The game comes out Oct. 3 and the hype from fans is steadily rising.

The program is where our local chapter, Theta Chi, collects items that helps the underprivileged kids start the school year with a bang! Our sorority was founded by seven educators, and our members carry on the passion and drive that our founders built this sorority upon. The three main focuses of this program are: (1) Affording children with quick and easy access to reference materials and other study aids and tools that will help themin their educational endeavors (2)Providing the children with the means of completing their homework assignments so that that they may remain current and up-to -date on course projects and requirements (3) Assisting the shelters, centers, schools and hospitals in their efforts to meet some of the educational needs of the children and young adults at these facilities The Theta Chi Chapter believes that
Brian Saunders Senior Writer The Donald Sterling situation this past May was exasperating and by the time it reached its climax it had many wondering what owner would incriminate themselves next as a racist. Look no further than Bruce Levenson, Atlanta Hawks owner. Levenson released a racially charged, though business-minded email in 2012 on catering to more white customers at Hawks home games never mind the fact that Atlanta is 54 percent black, which well represents the crowd demographic. The fact that Levenson selfreported the email that contradicted his stand on racial insensitivity during the Sterling saga had many puzzled. Although what Levenson said was disheartening, it is not surprising. I am sure every billion-dollar businessperson thinks like that.
sometimes the smallest things can make a big difference, such as starting the school year with a new binder or a new pack of colorful pencils. These little gestures can excite the students, motivating them to do great things in their classroom, especially if the student has never had possessions to truly be able to call their own. Our sisters have faith in these children’s bright futures and we feel it is our social obligation to give them every possible avenue toward achieving their dreams. As college students, we are only able to give so much from our own pockets. Our Sisters volunteer at the local nonprofit, For Kids, afterschool programs, mentor and even substitute teach. It hurts our hearts to see that some students lack access to adequate resources in the home, such as a dictionary or a computer, vital in this day for nearly every homework assignment. With you donation we hope to be able to provide these kids with an abundance of materials necessary start off the school year on a positive and eager note. All of the proceeds will be given to Jaycox Elementary. Donations will be accepted Sept. 7 - Sept. 20.

Hawks general manager Danny Ferry’s comments this June were more troubling in a conference call about free agent Luol Deng. “He’s a good guy overall, but he’s not perfect. He got some African in him. And I don’t say that in a bad way,” Ferry spewed. Ferry also said, “He has a store out front that’s beautiful and great, but he may be selling some counterfeit stuff behind you.” Ferry has maintained he was just repeating information gathered from multiple sources, however, that does not excuse the discriminatory remarks. He is a grown man and no one forced him to repeat them. As everyone does when they screw up, Ferry has expressed how sorry he was, but he has since been put on a leave of absence. NBA commissioner Adam Silver, who

ousted Donald Sterling for saying he didn’t want his mistress being seen with black men in an audio tape, while he was never disciplined for his well documented acts of hardcore racism, maintained Ferry should not lose his job over his remarks. Ferry, who played at Duke University, and then for 13 years in the NBA has been around the NBA for 24 years. You would think he knew better. Obviously not. What does “he has some African in him” symbolize? Why that is even in a basketball scouting report in the first place is the bigger issue at hand. Deng, who also went to Duke, is familiar with Ferry. Deng, who averages 16 points and six rebounds per game, is from South Sudan on the continent of Africa. Whether he meant it in a bad way or not, you should know not to say it at all. This is basketball; hypotheticals that shape not only Deng, but Africans in general as shady business proprietors

are random if nothing else. It is a lazy and thoughtless analogy for a white man to unfairly paint a black man’s character as a deceptive con man. What about Deng’s multiple charitable efforts? Deng has done work in Africa with Basketball without Borders; he has also worked with the Lost Boys of Sudan refugees amongst many other organizations. Does that represent the African in him? According to a 2007 Washington Post article on Deng winning a sportsmanship award, Bulls general manger John Paxson said, He really does epitomize everything I had hoped for as a person and a basketball player.” “I think it’s one of the reasons we’ve gotten to the level we’re at this year. I’m truly proud of him. I think the world of him as a person and as a player.” If that is casually said about a good character guy like Deng, what is said

about a player with documented character flaws, what do these front office guys say about them? In 2014, we have access to any and everything we want . Sterling, Levenson and Ferry are the first three to be caught and have set a dangerous precedent. Discriminatory language will not be tolerated any longer. It makes me wonder how many of the conversations go on while recruiting players, it could be happening in your favorite professional team’s front office. Heck it could be happening at your University. In the 21st century, everything you say is under a microscope because everything is available to anyone. It’s time folks are mindful of the nonsense that comes out of their mouths.
