Summary
Insects representing 5 different orders contain androgen and estrogen-like substances as determined by radioimmunoassay. Estradiol and estriol have been identified by gas chromatography-mass spectrometry. The presence of these steroids in insects suggests that the vertebrate sex hormones have an ancient evolutionary history.

Mass spectrometry was performed on a Finnigan Model 4021 Automated Gas Chromatograph/EI-CI spectrometer (for EI GC/MS analysis). GC separations were preformed on a 3% OV-17 column using a programmed linear temperature gradient from 200°C to 250°C at a rate of 2°C/min.
