Adventure Time crammed countless individual conclusions into Monday’s series finale, each satisfying in their own way, but no singular moment elicited more joyful gasps than the confirmation of Princess Bubblegum and Marceline the Vampire Queen as an official romantic couple. When Marceline thought Bubblegum had become the latest casualty in the battle against GOLB’s minions, she unleashed hell on the enemy, only to discover that Bubblegum had survived the attack — a moment they celebrated with a long-awaited first kiss.
As for how the momentous lip lock came together, executive producer Adam Muto tells TVLine, “There was some conversation about [logistics], but it was really up to [Hanna K. Nyströmthe], the storyboard artist who got that scene, to decide what her take on it was going to be. It actually wasn’t in the outline when it was submitted. It didn’t say that they kiss. It just said they ‘have a moment.’ When Hanna boarded that, there was a little note in the margin that said ‘Come on!’ with a big exclamation point. That was the only note. I can’t argue with that.”
That kiss, coupled with a few shots of the two looking cozy in the final montage, would suggest that Bubblegum and Marceline have finally decided to make their relationship official — an assumption Muto says you would not be incorrect to make.
“There’s enough to draw a conclusion,” he says. “I don’t want to lay out their entire future — what their relationship will be like after this, and all that — but there are enough pieces there that you can kind of construct what their life will be like going forward. We knew that if we put this in, it would get some attention. But would it be too much attention? … Or would we be downplaying it too much? We knew we wanted to incorporate it, and in the end, you just have no control over how people will remember things.”
Muto says that the Bubblegum-Marceline kiss has “been an ongoing conversation. … It certainly wasn’t in the show’s original pitch. It was a relationship that evolved over time,” offering former writer/storyboarder Rebecca Sugar (Steven Universe) the credit for building and nurturing that connection.

It was confirmed years ago. But they didn’t seem like they wanted to get back together until the very last episode. Why not before?
Because it’s illegal in some countries where the show airs to portray gay people in a positive light. If you watch closely, it seems that they got back together around ‘Stakes’ or ‘Varmints’. The one episode appears to have them going on a dinner date at the Ice King’s.
It was odd. Had mixed feelings on the ice king part…
I kinda guessed they’d go in that direction if they could get away with it when Bonnibell sniffed Marceline’s sweaty shirt. Plus she had zero interest in Finn. I sure would have loved to have seen their gender swapped counterparts go in the same direction.
Hmmm, so there really are adults out there who get excited over lesbian liplocks in a kids’ cartoon. Ooh, the illicit thrill! Tsk. Meanwhile, any kids who see it will think it’s gross. Indoctrination fail!
Er, no. It’s not just about two women kissing on a cartoon show, it’s about two characters sharing affection through what has been a maturing relationship.
My kids found it sweet. Because it was.

How ignorant way of thinking, people like you need to vanish from this world. I think it is great way to show children its okay to be different. Honestly, you disgust me.
Sure, Finn and PB are okay to fantasize! – except Finn is 13 years old and PB is 28. You are perpetuating pedophilia as well as homophobia! As a kid I was pretty grossed out of every single boy/ girl kiss, it’s propaganda.
Okay I agree with every thing you said here except that Bonnie is actually biologically 19 lol, and her real age is like…800
Finn has aged over the seasons, at some point during the final ones it’s stated that he’s 17
Why everything have to be gay? even children tv. I know why now kids watch Narcos and tv series about mexican drug dealer is the most heteresexual tv they can get. And by the way communist propaganda use to be free why now we have to pay to see your gay propaganda?
Be afraid of the gay propaganda and … Narcos, apparently. #snowflake
It’s funny that communist countries are anti-gay and the land of freedom is meant to be America.
Well congrats. You’re the most stuck-up person I’ve ever seen reply to such a sweet and nurturing moment. Well done on winning the award of “It’s 2018, get with the times” award.
The homophobic posts here are just more of those right-wing troll bots that have been running rampant online, thanks to Trump’s and Putin’s regimes.
“Jerrica’s” (a foreign bot mispelling if I’ve ever seen it) post is a copy pasta already posted twice prior. It’s all the same troll “person” with multiple accounts.
And why does the fact that there are two gay characters out of a multitude of others without said definition, make the entire series “gay” to you? And also, why should that term be implied in a pejorative sense. Some might call that a prejudice. Of course, maybe I’m wrong, and your distaste for perceived gayness has some other motivation. Maybe you’re under the mistaken impression that homosexual people don’t exist, and therefore can’t be represented. Like they’re an urban legend. Of course, even if that were true, Adventure Time exists in a fantasy universe, so anything goes. For example, the notion that people of different orientations, might enjoy seeing themselves represented along with everybody else.
“Everything” is gay, that’s such an ignorant statement. Did you know that it was against FCC regulations to positively portray gay people until very recently? Did you know that LGBT+ youth have had an astronomical suicide rate that has gotten better since positive representation of homosexuality in media has increased? Did you know that some kids, whatever their sexuality, are being raised by same sex couples? Do you think these kids don’t deserve to have their families represented along with everyone else? Do you think that kids growing up, realizing they’re gay should be taught that what they are is shameful and should be repressed?
I truly hope you don’t have children, ever. May infertility be your blessing to the earth.
Sooo here’s the thing hon, gay people exist, and just like strait people, they have a right to be on tv. If you dont like it dont watch it, and “gay propaganda” doesn’t exist. please stop shoving your straitness down peoples throats.
Kindly, your neighborhood lesbian

It’s a great show
Bonnie and Marcy are a sweet couple.
A llorar a otra parte con tu homofobia.
What a way to ruin the show
I don’t think that a simple cute kiss should really ruin the show for you. It’s actually quite sad that THIS would make a show “horrible” I think it’s great that they showed two amazing characters having a beautiful moment together. People like you are what make me sick.
LOL! I think the creators are happy to make a bigot cry!
Yes ikr lmaoooo
Hi,
I’m very disappointed in your behavior. You are acting like a child. I dont care if being lgbtqia+ is against your beliefs, if you dont want lets say a satanist (i am one lol) to force their beliefs on you dont force your homophobic beliefs on Others .
Kindly, your friendly neighbor hood lesbian.
Ps. You disgust me
Yay! I think that they make a super adorable couple. And I’m really glad that we got to see they kissing. Even if it’s in the very end.
Right!? God bless open-minded people. All this ignorance is so stupid. I couldn’t be anymore grateful. We need more of these types of things.
I liked the finale I just wished they didn’t add the 1000 years later bid and I wished their was more talking w the characters instead oh the sing hole lady singing the theme – like talked about where they’re going aka fin and jake say goodbye to their friends before he goes with his mom instead of laying down on the beach – I personally feel like tht the show is now over I feel like a part of me is missing
For years I have waited for this. I don’t care what anyone else says, this makes me beyond happy. I love the support and I like this show 100x’s better. Thank you so much.
How did you feel about Marceline originally being attracted to males (at least for the first 1,000 years of her life) with her boyfriend Ash from Season 3?
You do realize bi people exist, right?
It was ok, would have rather preffered the kiss not to be included since it’s a kid’s show after all, but it didn’t completly spoil it.
Well Finn and Flame Princess kissed before so are you saying that’s inappropriate? A kiss is just a kiss anything inappropriate would go far beyond a kiss and I believe you understand that too. Unless of course you just mean love is only kid friendly between a guy and gal which is of course excluding same sex love. As long no one is groping each other on screen (straight or same sex) I think it’s pretty valid and PG to have it shown on a kid’s show.
Yeah that’s pretty much it. Didn’t know that just because people in Washington DC declare it to be ok meant we needed to have it on kids television
Which kiss? LSP kisses Lemongrab, Marceline kisses Bonnibel, and Betty kisses Simon all in the same episode. They were all pretty tame; nothing beyond a kiss… The only reason someone would have a problem with one out of the three is because it will get in the way of them poisoning their children’s minds with their own prejudices, am I right?
if a kid needs to have this imagery pushed on them for them to think it needs to be “tolereated” (which they don’t) then they will come to that conclusion on their own,and not have to be Lead To that conclusion. I get the argument can be made for heterosexual scenes as well which i dont condone either, i see no need to introduce children to sexuality of anykind before they are ready, its just one groups agenda being pushed over another plain and simple,no equality here just one saying im better than you now, which is dissapointing af ,im all for positive images for any group who isnt harming another, introducing kids to sexuality this early is why we see so much pedo porn now i feel, kids see this and think im supposed to act this way, while yes, its healthy to a degree as an adult, kids know no better, and we aren’t really giving them any good examples now are we?
While I agree with your statement, “…I see no need to introduce children to sexuality of any kind before they are ready…,” the kiss displayed in the show showed nothing of sexual activity; it was mere “tender moment.” Someone almost died and their partner kissed them after seeing them alive and well, not including the concussion that is. Now answer this question if you want: if this were an article on a straight couple would you really post the same comment (not word for word I know)? What about parents who kiss each other goodbye for work in front of their kids? Is that exposing them too early? There is nothing wrong with showing straight couples or same sex couples on TV as long as they aren’t “down each other’s throats,” during a kiss. Also if this kiss/imagery was, “…pushed…,” on kids then, oh, boy, do you not see other kids shows. Teen Titans Go has quite a lot of, “…pushed…,” imagery (all straight, like that fact is relevant though). Animation is art. Art is an imitation of life. Although mythical creatures and stretching dogs don’t exist in real life those cartoon shows still often work off of real life. What was/is shown is an imitation of some aspects of real daily life. Same sex couples exist right next to straight couples in real life. Straight couples are imitated in cartoons and no one bats an eye, (supposedly) same sex couples should be treated the same; no double standards should prevent that.
I don’t think kids should be going around kissing each other anyway… That’s how we get an oral herpes/hpv epidemic. People trying to turn America in Babylon/Sodom more and more everyday…sad.
So is this the first episode of the new season?
Princess Bubblegum HATED Marceline early in the series, and why does everyone forget that Marceline had a boyfriend (Ash)? Ash may have been a jerk, but it showed that Marceline was originally attracted to males. The idea of PB and Marceline being an item didn’t even seem to be conceived of until after season 5. I’m not against lesbianism at all, but so many people want to believe that Pendleton Ward planned for them to be together from the very beginning. I don’t think that’s true, and you wouldn’t see that at all from watching every episode of the first five seasons. I believe that it was an idea that was worked into the series later.
You do realize bi people exist lmao. Some people are so ignorant it makes me laugh. I bet the creators of this show are so happy they. Made a homophobic bigot cry.
