The “Yomiuri TV 55th Anniversary Character Character Illustration Contest” was held from Tuesday, November 13th 2012 to Thursday, December 13th. We’ve now chosen a winner!

The screenwriter of anime TIGER & BUNNY and the live-action Youkai Ningen Bem, Masafumi Nishida, created the idea of Yomiuri Television’s 55th Anniversary character, the energetic Kukku the Shoe! This contest was held to create an official design of Kukku and the winning design is awarded 550,000 yen for its usage.
Only 2 winners were planned in the beginning, but thanks to everyone’s participating, we got over an amazing 600 entries! We added more winners to the Judges’ award category so we ended up choosing 8 winners.

“Hallway slipper” as a theme is really difficult so the winning character design needs to capture the audience. This entry featured a character that was not only cute but instills many emotions in the viewer, such as loneliness, mystery, and has such charm that makes the viewer want to know more about this lovable character. It was the best Kukku design that’s easy to use in stories, so I chose it as the winner.

Our 8 winners! Congratulations!

Main Judge Masafumi Nishida wrote a general comment about all of the submissions:

Thanks to everyone who made hallway slipper Kukku come to life! All the entries included individuality and a Kukku that was very animated with personality. I smiled since everyone’s imagination was admirably playful, which made the selection process enjoyable. Due to that, it made the seleciton process much more difficult... I couldn’t just choose one!!! I had to make room for more winners. Starting today, we’ll take care of all of these submitted living hallway slipper Kukkus! Thanks to everyone for your support!

No entry was better than the other which left our judges with immense worry on how to choose a winner.
Kukku the Shoe will be featured in picture books, animations, merchandise and other things, so hopefully Kukku will be loved for generations. Please look for Kukku’s coming adventures!
