Glentoran lift League Cup
Glenavon 0-1 Glentoran A 73rd minute penalty scored by Scott Young was enough to give Glentoran victory in Tuesday night's Coca-Cola League Cup final at Windsor Park. The nippy Glaswegian slotted in the spot-kick after substitute Darren Fitzgerald had been fouled. It gives the Belfast Glens their second trophy of the season as they won the Nationwide Gold Cup in December. Roy Coyle's side can make it a hat-trick of trophies as they play Linfield in the Nationwide Irish Cup final on 5 May. Hit woodwork Glentoran had most of the chances in a rather disappointing match. Near the end of the first half, Tim McCann had a volley well saved and Pete Batey put a good opportunity wide.
Darren Lockhart hit the woodwork twice inside three minutes early in the seconf half. First his 30-yard shot struck the crossbar and then a header from a Colin Nixon corner came off a post. Glenavon lost Gerard McMahon through injury in the 50th minute. Then his strike partner, an off-colour Garry Haylock, was substituted. Glentoran got their matchwinner when substitute Darren Fitzgerald was fouled by Kieran Rafferty. 'Cannot complain' Referee Herbie Barr pointed to the spot and 24-year-old Young stepped up to secure Glentoran's first win over Glenavon this season. Glentoran manager Roy Coyle said that despite there being just one goal, it had been a decent cup final. "There was a lot of good football played with plenty of chances, especially for ourselves," said Coyle. "Glenavon cannot really complain about the penalty because we created so many chances. "I think we deserved to win." |
