George H. Colton (Editor), Wiley & Putnam (Publisher), Whig Party (N.Y.)
"The magazine was collected into sixteen regular semi-annual volumes by the publishers and then re-issued with the additions of corrections and indexes. The volumes from 1845- 1847 (I-VI) comprise the First Series of the magazine, while the volumes from 1848-1852 are the New Series (I-X ; whole numbers VII - XVI). The AWR was first published by Wiley and Putnam (January-June,1845), then by George H. Colton (July 1845-1847) from 118 Nassau Street, and, finally, by D.W. Holly (1848-1852), who also published the Democratic Review in 1852"-- Andrews, Donald Frank, 'The American Whig Review, 1845-1852: Its History and Literary Contents' PhD diss., University of Tennessee, 1977

For February 1846 and March 1849, two separate volumes, "New Series" is indicated on the cover of the March 1849 volume. The numbering sequence indicates these are considered part of a "new series." It seems to follow the numbering sequence from v. 2, July 1845, although the statement "new series" only appears on v. 3,. December 1847, v. 6., no. 6, seems to follow from a different numbering sequence. George Colton is the editor in all of these
On the cover of December, 1847, v. 6, no. 6., roman numeral, "NO. XXXVI" appears; On the cover of March 1849, appears: "New Series. No. XV.--Whole Number LI. March, 1849." From the volumes cited in this record, between 1845 and 1849, it cannot be determined what series or sequence the roman numerals stand for
