Chicago Cubs 2013 first-round pick Kris Bryant is headed to Single-A Daytona after being promoted from Short Season-A ball, the Cubs announced on Monday.

Bryant, 21, hit .354 with four home runs for the Boise Hawks in 18 games after leading all collegiate players with 31 home runs for the University of San Diego this past season.

"We felt Daytona was a place Kris would be able to go and compete in his draft summer once he got enough at-bats under his belt,” Cubs director of scouting Jason McLeod said. “With Daytona being in the playoffs, Kris will get three-plus weeks down there which will be nice.”

Another reason Bryant skipped a stop at Single-A Kane County and went straight to high-A ball in Daytona is the Cubs want current Kane County third baseman Jeimer Candelario to continue to get playing time.

Bryant was just named Northwest League Player of the Week after hitting .529 with a homer and five RBIs.

McLeod said recently the Cubs like to sometimes promote players at the end of the season to the place where they may start the next one. Bryant was the No. 2 overall pick in June’s amateur draft.
