UFC 214 results: Brian Ortega submits Renato Moicano to end wild fight

ANAHEIM, Calif. -- Both Brian Ortega and Renato Moicano came into their UFC 214 matchup ranked in the bottom half of the featherweight top 10.

The both threw down Saturday at the Honda Center like they had something to prove.

But after two rounds of bedlam, Ortega went to his bread and butter in round three. The fighter from Los Angeles’ South Bay area thrilled the crowd with a guillotine choke finish at the 2:59 mark of the third round.

Both fighters landed big shots in a rock ‘em, sock 'em first round which wowed the crowd, with Ortega seeming to do more damage.

The second round was another defense-free affair, as every time Ortega pushed forward and seemed to be on the verge of permanently turning the fight in his favor, Moicano would answer with a variety of counters which made significant impact. By the end of round two, Moicano was bleeding hideously from what appeared to be a broken nose.

Round three started slowly, but picked up, as both guys scored with flurries of punches. Moicano went for a takedown, and Ortega was only happy to oblige, as he cinched in the choke for his sixth career submission and eight career finish.

Ortega, the former RFA champ, improved to 12-0 (1 NC). Moicano dropped to (11-1-1).

“It was a tough fight for sure, but we drilled specifically because we knew he was a point fighter,” Ortega said. “We knew the opportunity would come late in the fight.”
