The spectrum of the Antares nebula.
Abstract
The [Fe ii]-rich nebula around the B companion of Antares is shown to be asymmetrical, with a region of diameter about 3"5 exhibiting strong lines, surrounded by a zone of weaker lines whose NW-SE extent may reach 15" (i.e., 2000 AU). The electron density and temperature cannot be determined from our plates covering the wavelength region 32004500 A because of important deviations from the statistical distribution of the populations of the metastable levels of Fe ii.
