Spangenberg making slow progress

Share

By the end of this weekend, Cory Spangenberg will have spent 15 days on the disabled list, but it doesn’t appear the infielder will be ready to come off when the Padres return from the All-Star break July 10.

Spangenberg suffered a left knee contusion June 27, when D-backs shortstop slid into him at second base. He went on the DL three days later, with the stint retroactive to June 28.

“I definitely feel better than when I started it,” Spangenberg said.

But after an attempt at ramping up his activity was cut short, the 24-year-old is back to the rest stage of his recovery.

“It isn’t going as quickly as we had hoped,” Padres interim manager Pat Murphy said. “He did some biking and some things like that the other day and got real sore.”

Continued rest, possibly through the break, is in order. In the meantime, the Padres will continue giving playing time to second baseman Jedd Gyorko.

Heading into Friday, Gyorko had hit .303 (10-for-33) with a double and a home run in nine games since being recalled from Triple-A El Paso.

  • As previously scheduled, Tim Federowicz (right knee surgery) will catch a simulated game by right-hander Brandon Morrow (right shoulder inflammation) on Saturday at Globe Life Park. If that goes according to plan, Federowicz will leave Saturday night to begin a rehab assignment with Low Single-A Fort Wayne.
  • The Padres will unveil the logo for the 2016 All-Star Game at Petco Park on July 10. The unveiling ceremony will take place at 10 a.m. PT at the Park at the Park.
