“The heartbeat of the world brings together every nation…cultures kissing…celebration!” These lyrics from the official One World Week 2006 anthem summed up the atmosphere on the night of the OWW launch party, held on 12 January. Diversity and international unity As soon as you stepped into the intimate setting of the Graduate Bar, you could see the spirit of diversity and international unity that is the essence of One World Week. OWW team members, bedecked in gorgeous national costumes and finery from nearly every continent, mingled with guests from the national press, officials from other universities, University of Warwick administrators and Student Union officers. Student Union President Kat Stark praised the unity engendered by OWW, the world’s largest student-run international event, noting: “One World Week demonstrates how individuals from different and sometimes conflicting cultures can have respect for one another and work together. It’s about celebrating the differences between us and not being fearful of them.” Vice-Chancellor of the University of Warwick, Professor David VandeLinde also paid tribute to the joys of One World Week, expressing the pride of the University at being associated with an event which “embodies all the values of being a student”. Professor VandeLinde added: “One World Week encourages having fun, engages their imagination while still talking about serious topics.” Sneak preview The distinctive One World Week feeling was stirred up even more at the launch party with performances by some of the teams which offered a preview of what lies ahead in the coming week.
The Carnival team started off with a hilarious skit, depicting a news broadcast interrupted by some most unusual happenings such as “Edinburgh… celebrating the Chinese New Year. Nigeria is the new centre of Bollywood!” Such strange events could only be attributed to one thing - One World Carnival! The Carnival team then dazzled with a lively and energetic dance to the sounds of Destra Garcia and Machel Montano’s soca hit It’s Carnival. Musical fusion The Day managers represented for the whole world at once in their multi-cultural dance as they managed to seamlessly incorporate British rock, Caribbean soca and Middle Eastern music, among other musical influences. The One World Fashion Show team hoe-downed to These Boots Are Made For Walking, the hit tune from the Dukes of Hazzard movie, in a sneak peak at what can be expected at their show which highlights A Century of Movies. The One World Party team got everyone buzzing with their powerful, provocative performance, which included live drummers. In all, those at the launch party would have been left with much the same feelings of OWW Co-ordinator Ingrid Warner after her first One World Week some two years ago: “I walked in uncertain, and walked out inspired!” |
