The city of Lebanon will soon be home to a new medical school on its 51-acre Samaritan Lebanon Community Hospital campus.

Pomona, Calif.-based Western University of Health Sciences has signed a 20-year lease to operate the new Samaritan Health Sciences Center and College of Osteopathic Medicine Northwest Campus.

The project broke ground earlier this week on a property west of the Samaritan Lebanon Community Hospital, which is in Lebanon’s newly formed urban renewal area.

Designed by Soderstrom Architects of Portland, the new $15 million, 55,000-square-foot facility will be owned and built by Samaritan Health Services using debt financing and fundraising.

Future plans for the campus include student housing, a medical office building, a hotel and a conference center.

The college is expected to be completed in 2011. Enrollment is expected to include 75 students at first, and eventually increase to more than 400.
