Since the inception of The Symphony Hall in 1982, we have seen many memorable
performances. The advanced acoustic system, allowing for two full seconds of
reverberation, has contributed to making these performances truly unique. Over 30-years
of The Symphony Hall’s history have been strongly influences by its renowned performers.
Here are two accounts of key persons deeply related with The Symphony Hall.

世界の名だたるホールでタクトを振り、
ホール設立当初からプロジェクトに深く関わってきた朝比奈隆氏。
マエストロの「日本初のクラシック音楽専用ホールをつくりたい」という揺るぎない思いを背景に、
朝日放送創立30周年記念事業の一環として、ザ・シンフォニーホールは作られました。
ステージ奥に携えられた＜パイプオルガン＞。舞台を客席が360度囲む＜アリーナ形式＞。
朝比奈氏が必要性を説いたそれらの様式は、いずれも日本クラシック業界初の試みでした。
多目的ホールのように、オーケストラピットや可動式舞台があるわけでもない。
そのシンプルなスタイルは、クラシック音楽を追求するという志の表れなのです。

Conductor Takashi Asahina (1908-2001), who had one of the longest careers of any conductor, accomplished great achievement for The Symphony Hall, “We should create Japan’s first music hall specifically for classical concerts.” From Mr. Asahina’s word, the innovative project to build The Symphony Hall began. He pursued creating the best music hall for classical music. His thoughts are reflected in the excellent acoustic system, the gorgeous pipe organ, and the arena theater design. It does not contain the orchestra pit or movable stage that multipurpose halls generally contain. Mr. Asahina believed this simplicity would distinguish The Symphony Hall from the ordinary hall. This became the foundation of the first classical music hall in Japan.

1984年、ベルリンフィルハーモニー管弦楽団を率いて
ザ・シンフォニーホールに初登場したヘルベルト・フォン・カラヤン。
20世紀を代表するマエストロが選んだ曲目は、『ドン・ファン』と『ローマの松』。
それはまるで、残響2秒というホールの響きを試すかのような選曲でした。
ベルリン・フィルのきらびやかな管弦楽が音の絵巻を見事に描き出した『ドン・ファン』。
金管楽器セクションが炸裂し、迫力あふれる演奏で聴き手を魅了した『ローマの松』。
演奏後に彼は、「ウィーン楽友協会大ホールに比肩するほどの世界一の音響だ」という言葉をこぼし、
舞台に口づけしたというエピソードが残っています。
まさに、設立当初からこだわってきた＜残響2秒＞が、世界に認められた瞬間でした。

In 1984, Herbert von Karajan (1908-1989) first appeared on the stage of The Symphony Hall with Berliner Philharmoniker. The brilliance of the acoustic system was demonstrated with their performance of R. Strauss’ Don Juan and O. Respighi’s Pines of Rome. People were captivated by this memorable performance. At the end of the evening Karajan stated, “The Symphony Hall has the excellent acoustics as great as the Winer Musikverein,” and proceeded to kiss the stage of the hall with gratitude.
