Money

(Does) Matters

B

elieve it or not, it’s already July! Have you taken the time to sit back, take a deep breath and reflect on the past six months? Did you manage to achieve all your daily goals? Are you leaps and bounds closer to your end goal? No? Let us help push you in the right direction! In our cover story this month (pages 40 – 44), we’ve decided to talk about what everyone knows is inevitable yet nobody really wants to approach the subject. Yes, it’s none other than money matters. With you in mind, it’s called, “Gen Y Money Matters”. How do you know if you’re saving enough money for your future? Or rather, how do you know if you’re saving money the right way? Are you aware of the other challenges that lie ahead of you, aside from just getting a job? The details are in those pages! We’ve also included a career feature for all of you, not just for those who are graduating soon. We dig deep into tricks of the trade for workplace success! Catered especially for the Gen Y, we discuss what skills your future manager might be looking for prior to promoting you or what form of communication they prefer in a workplace. We also touch on the role of social media in the office, how it can help you and how it can ultimately destroy you. Get the lowdown in pages 48 and 49. On a more festive note, since Hari Raya Aidilfitri is just around the corner, we figured that some of you might be feeling a little creative. Hence, we’re ringing in the festivities with easy Raya cookies recipes in our DIY pages (pages 50 and 51). Whether you intend to impress your family, friends, or loved ones, you can bet that you’ll get tongues-a-wagging with these yummylicious treats! If you’re not exactly celebrating Hari Raya but you want to soak in the festivities, then flip to our travel pages. We’ve narrowed down some amazing, all-Malaysian homestay places that will allow you to live like a local. The best part is that most of the destinations are surrounded by nature! So, if you’re up for an affordable, traditional R&R, check out pages 64 and 65. Finally, I must announce that this will be my last issue with Campus Plus magazine. While it has been fun to be a part of the team, it’s also time to move on. I hope you’ve enjoyed my company as much as I’ve enjoyed writing for you guys. It has been fun! And with that, I bid you adieu.

JULY 2014

Congratulations To APU Graduates –

Class Of June 2014

More than 300 graduates celebrated one of their most important days at APU with their friends and family on the 21 June 2014, at the Renaissance Hotel, Kuala Lumpur. Happiness and joy appeared on the faces of everyone who attended the event; especially the parents of graduates, who witnessed the success of their children. Representatives from APU’s prestigious partner in education, Staffordshire University, UK, joined us to celebrate the achievements and success of the graduates. As the hall of the Grand Ballroom opened, graduates marched proudly into the hall, and the graduation ceremony commenced. Following the academic procession, words of wisdom were presented by our Vice Chancellor, Prof Les Trustrum and Executive Pro Vice Chancellor of Staffordshire University, Rosy Crehan. On the other hand, the Valedictory Speech presented by Kok Cheng Mun, graduate of B.Sc. (Hons) Software Engineering, projected the sweetest memories of students at APU, as well as the highest appreciation and gratitude to families, lecturers, staff and friends who attended the ceremony on that day. Graduates who received their scrolls included those form the Bachelor’s Degrees and Masters Degree programmes. Top students were rewarded with Outstanding Student Awards and Outstanding Project Awards, to recognise their success and effort in their studies. Founder and Chief Executive Officer (CEO) of APIIT Education Group, Datuk Dr Parmjit Singh, delivered the closing address, and the ceremony ended successfully. Camera lights flashed everywhere, as graduates took the golden opportunity to capture beautiful photos with their friends and family, while enjoying the high tea being served at the buffet line.

INTI Provides A Platform For

Learning And Discovery For Thunderbird Students

MARCINIAK (LEFT) AND DEL GRANADO (3RD FROM LEFT) WITH FELLOW T-BIRDS MATT MCCONATY AND VENKATESH SRINIVASAIAH AT INTI INTERNATIONAL COLLEGE KUALA LUMPUR

Over thirty graduate students from Thunderbird School of Global Management descended upon INTI International College, Kuala Lumpur at the start of their six-week study tour to understand the landscape, culture and best practices in doing business in Malaysia. ‘T-birds’, as these students call themselves, were from the #1 ranked school of international business in the United States. Nicolas del Granado from Bolivia and Jakub Marciniak from Germany were ecstatic that INTI was chosen by their school to host the Thunderbird delegation. They were also appreciative of the experience gained by studying out of INTI’s city campus. Utilising INTI’s advanced campus facilities, students were able to participate in lectures via video conferencing, tap into its library resources and conduct group project discussions. They also enjoyed the opportunity to engage in cross-cultural discussions with campus students and to network with local entrepreneurs. INTI’s broad links with industry giants also meant that its students had access to corporations like MDeC, IBM and Accenture, which they visited for an understanding of different business operations and their requirements of graduates. The study tour is part of the Thunderbird graduate programme where students are encouraged to travel during the course of their studies to enhance their global perspective on international business and management issues. The tour also provides students real-life exposure to the landscape of local markets in different countries to help them make the proper evaluation and research for their theses and assignments. The T-birds’ learning experience also encompasses the chance to enjoy and explore Malaysia’s cultural heritage and national diversity. 8

Taylor’s Law Awareness Day Addresses Issues Of The Malaysian Juvenile Justice System Taylor’s University today launched its communitydriven project, the Taylor’s Street Law Project, during its Law Awareness Day, one of the annual highlight events organised by Taylor’s Law School. The Law Awareness Day is part of Taylor’s Law School’s commitment to promote awareness about key legal issues in the country. The launch of this annual event was officiated by Office of Attorney General’s Chief of Staff, Puan Swandra Kim Chu Ramachandran, on behalf of Attorney General of Malaysia, Tan Sri Abdul Gani Patail. Taylor’s University Vice Chancellor and President, Professor Dato’ Dr. Hassan Said expressed his appreciation towards the Attorney General’s office for their support towards this event. The Street Law Project is a community initiative of taking legal education to the streets to increase the awareness among different groups of Malaysians on basic rights that will matter to them. This project will allow our students to go beyond the normal classroom learning, to engage with the industry in efforts to expose them to real life issues beyond the pages of their textbooks and the walls of their classroom, thus developing them into well-rounded and holistic graduates, who will eventually present themselves with a passion to contribute to the society. The Taylor’s Law Awareness Day, a one-day event, has a five-fold aim, namely, to educate and raise awareness amongst the university community about the entrenched rights of children; to mobilise various Governmental and Non-Governmental Organisations (NGO’s) and civil society as a whole to advocate for better policies in protecting rights of children; to be able to reach out to the community and educate them about the operations of the Criminal Justice System; to raise the visibility of the law school with various government and non-governmental organisations; and lastly, to provide networking opportunities for students with various organisations.

Vans Uses The Power Of The Force To Release

STAR WARS Branded Footwear And Apparel Designs Vans takes off to a galaxy far, far away for an out-of-this-world collection featuring artwork from the original Star Wars trilogy. The Force is strong in this intergalactic offering that extends from Classics and Vault by Vans footwear to men’s apparel and women’s accessories. By combining heritage Vans prints with iconic Star Wars characters, both entities present a truly unique capsule this universe has never seen before. The Vans x Star Wars collection kicks off with a six-piece offering from Classics. Aligning with the Dark Side, Vans introduces two colourways of the Authentic featuring Boba Fett and Stormtrooper characters. The Boba Fett camo colourup enhances the bounty hunters’ disguise alongside the Death Star, Darth Vader and the Stormtrooper to paint a dark scene of the evil Empire. The second style surfaces in the Stormtrooper bandana print that mashes up one of Vans archived patterns with the Galactic Empire’s henchmen for a discreet, all-over arrangement. Yoda brings balance to the Force with his special takes on the Authentic and Sk8-Hi Reissue. Blended with Vans’ Hawaiian pattern and images of Yoda, the peaceful aloha motif covers the uppers of the low top and hits each quarter panel of the high top. As a tribute to the original film, Vans pairs the Classic Slip-On with the 1977 poster artwork from Star Wars Episode IV: A New Hope and showcases the Era in comic-book style graphics from vintage Star Wars merchandise. Young Padawans and small Sith lords can enjoy the collection as well with kid and toddler-sized shoes featuring the Yoda-inspired art and comic-book graphics as well as two kids-specific Stormtrooper and Darth Vader prints. As a tie back to Classics footwear, Vans x Star Wars brings forth an assortment of men’s apparel and women’s accessories. The men’s series highlights the Yoda aloha and Stormtrooper bandana prints across a selection of tees, with an additional cap, backpack and sock pack dedicated to Yoda’s special pattern. The women’s range of accessories incorporates both sets of imagery into a focused, fashion-forward ensemble of backpacks and hats. The Vans x Star Wars Classics and Apparel collection will be available at Vans boutiques nationwide.

JENNIFER LOPEZ, PITBULL AND CLAUDIA LEITTE PERFORMING THE FIFA THEME AT THE WORLD CUP 2014 OPENING CEREMONY

The grand opening of the FIFA World Cup 2014 in Brazil was greeted by a symphony of Latin superstars performing the theme song for the biggest football tournament on the planet. The undisputable queen of latina pop, Jennifer Lopez performed the hit song We Are One (Ole Ola) alongside Brazilian pop princess, Claudia Leitte and Pitbull, arguably the hottest music superstar to have come out of Latin America. Anyone who tuned in to the World Cup’s opening ceremony hoping to learn precisely what a World Cup opening ceremony is for would have come away slightly disappointed. Unlike, say, Olympic opening ceremonies, they are not supposed to be any kind of reflection on the host country. Indeed, such parochialism would be downright frowned upon by today’s World Cup mentality, considering that both the official anthem and slogan this time round is the typically Fifa-ishly nonsensical and distinctly Benetton-esque, We Are One. As many have pointed out, the lead singers of the anthem this year, Pitbull and Jennifer Lopez, seem to have been chosen in the spirit of this kind of international unity, seeing as neither are actually Brazilian. Pitbull was born in the US to Cuban parents and Lopez, albeit originally From The Block, is also American with Puerto Rican parents. But all that’s forgotten when Jennifer Lopez emerged on stage, putting on a great show with her sensuous performance and revealing, body-hugging outfit which almost brought down the stadium. J.Lo, you go girl! 20

If you have watched this year’s Electronic Entertainment Expo, you would have seen the video game developers showcase their upcoming titles featuring super-soldiers, assassins, robbers and secret agents. However, all of these characters had one thing in common, they are men. The issue of lack of female protagonists in the video game industry has once again become the highlight. When asked about it, Ubisoft’s technical director James Therien responded that implementing a playable female lead would have doubled the work, especially since they have to customise many features. He also claimed that female leads were initially planned for the game, but ended up running into the “reality of game development”. Unfortunately, this justification led to a greater criticism because a total of 10 studios are working on the game. Thus, it seems unreasonable to suggest the implementation of female leads would be too much work. Ubisoft further put themselves in an unfavourable situation when its animation director on Assassin’s Creed III, Jonathan Cooper, Tweeted that it is estimated it would take only “a day or two’s work” instead of replacing thousands of animations. But, things got worse when Cooper revealed that gamers can actually play as a female character in an Assassin’s Creed prototype game, by entering a secret, particular name. So which is it then? On one hand, they said that creating female video game characters is too much work, but then they say that they do have a playable female character, if only for the prototype version of the game. If what Cooper revealed is true, all you can do is hope that Ubisoft change their direction or you will have to accept their decision to play as a man.

Schumacher’s Miraculous Recovery

From A State Of Comatose

The End Of Tiki-Taka For

La Roja?

Tiki-taka is a style of play in football characterised by short passing and movement, working the ball through various channels, and maintaining possession. The style is primarily associated with La Liga club Barcelona from Johan Cruyff’s tenure as manager to the present, and the Spanish national team under managers Luis Aragonés and Vicente del Bosque. Tiki-taka moves away from the traditional thinking of formations in football to a concept derived from zonal play. Spain’s elimination from the World Cup by Chile not only spelt the end for one of the greatest national teams, but also threatened the demise of an entire footballing philosophy. Spain’s intricate passing style, dubbed ‘tiki-taka’, swept all before it for the best part of six years, but the sight of Andres Iniesta and Xabi Alonso being harried out of their stride by Jorge Sampaoli’s hard-working “red-hot Chile peppers” at the Maracana on Wednesday felt like the end of an era. All great teams eventually meet their nemesis. Rarely, though, have we witnessed a sporting sunset as sudden and dramatic as the one that has come down on Spain’s soccer team at this year’s World Cup. After losing to Netherlands by the shocking margin of 5-1, the worst defeat in history for a reigning World Cup champion, Spain was eliminated from the tournament. Chile, who is nobody’s favourite to win the Cup, beat the Spanish. Another triumph in Brazil would have strengthened its claim to be the greatest national team ever to play the people’s game. It was not just its superlative record that set the Spanish team apart; it was the manner of its victories. In its six years of global supremacy, it perfected the tiki-taka style, which has players string together a series of rapid, short passes, many of them on first touch, denying their opponents the ball for long periods and ultimately wearing them down. Altogether, they produced amazingly intricate ball movements that all too often bamboozled their opponents and left them chasing shadows. Others loved its precision and fluidity, but nobody could argue with its success until recently. It is tempting to put it down to the passage of time and the ageing process. Soccer is a gruelling sport and most players peak in their late twenties. What happened to Spain went beyond the ageing process, questionable tactics and individual failings. The mystique of La Roja and its aura of invincibility had long vanished and evaporated. It is a sad way for what sportswriters like to refer to as “a dynasty” to end. But before the Spanish tiki-taka men return back to Catalonia and Madrid, we should pause and bid them farewell, or rather, adios España!

Schumi is back! The F1 legend has finally come out of his coma. Michael Schumacher hit his head while skiing in the French Alps resort of Meribel on December 29th, 2013. He was operated on for a brain haemorrhage and was left in a coma fighting for life. His manager, Sabine Kehm confirmed he had left hospital and was no longer in a coma on June 16th, 2014. He has been moved from CHU Grenoble, a French hospital to an unspecified clinic in Switzerland where he will continue his rehabilitation. Schumacher had been placed in a medically-induced coma for almost six months after suffering a massive head trauma or injury while skiing in December. Initially, doctors were unsure whether Schumacher, 45, would survive. But by late January, doctors began to try to wake him up. Racing fans and the public at large will be encouraged by this positive development. Medical experts have previously warned that Schumacher has a one in ten chance of making a complete recovery despite waking up from a coma. Only one in ten patients who spent so many months in a coma went on to recover all or most of their mental and physical capacities. So let us all hope Schumacher makes a full recovery soon. We extend our warmest hearts and sincerest prayers to him and his family.

NO MONEY FOR SPA? THE SECRET TO GREAT SKIN IS AS CLOSE AS YOUR KITCHEN! TREAT YOUR SKIN TO THESE FEW EASY, HOMEMADE SINGLE INGREDIENT MASKS.

MIXING IT UP OILY SKIN RECIPE Option One – 3 tbsp. banana + 1 tsp. honey + a few drops of lemon juice Option Two – 3 tbsp. fineground oatmeal + 2 tbsp. yogurt + ½ tsp. honey DRY SKIN RECIPE Option One – ½ very ripe and soft avocados + ¼ cup honey Option Two – 1 tsp mashed banana + 1 tsp plain yogurt + 1 tsp honey WARNING It’s very important to test the mask before going full on. Certain ingredients or recipes might work for some people, it doesn’t necessarily mean that it will work for you. Different people have different skin types and needs, thus always test to see how your skin reacts to it.

BANANA

YOGURT

Mash up a piece of ripe banana, and then apply the smooth paste on your face and neck. Leave it for 10-20 minutes before rinsing it off with cold water. Banana is filled with antioxidants and is a great natural moisturiser.

Scoop about one tablespoon of plain yogurt into a separate bowl and light-handedly spread a thin layer over your face. Let it sit about 20 minutes then rinse with cold water. It contains zinc for anti-inflammatory properties and lactic acid that helps to prevent premature skin ageing.

MILK Mix ¼ cup of powdered milk with just enough water to form a thick paste, and then spread it over your face and leave it till it’s completely dry and stiff before rinsing with warm water. Milk has been used as a beauty aid for centuries. Cleopatra, the Queen of Egypt is one who swears by it. It’s great for whitening and helps soothes skin irritation.

HONEY Chill your honey in the fridge before applying a thin layer onto your face. Leave it for about 5-10 minutes then rinse with warm water. Honey not only contains powerful antioxidant properties, it’s also blessed with antiseptic and antibacterial properties to fight acne, cuts and burns.

ALL ABOUT NECKTIES

JULY 2014

A GENTLEMAN’S ACCESSORIES SO YOU DON’T OWN A TIE BECAUSE YOU DON’T THINK THAT YOU NEED ONE. TRUTHFULLY, DON’T FOOL YOURSELF!

M

en with elegance understand the importance of a tie to pull an outfit together. As there are so many different types, materials and designs, which should you choose? We speak to Yang Lee Keong, the owner of 15sheets, a pioneering men’s boutique located in Bangsar, to tell us more about this most basic of men’s accessories. Tell us more about the tie materials. The four basic materials for ties are silk, polyester or microfiber, cotton and wool. The trend for these materials comes and goes according to the season. For example, a lighter material such as cotton will be worn often during spring and summer while heavier material such as wool will be seen more often in fall and winter. Recently, knit material is slowly trending amongst the younger generation. What has changed tremendously with tie trends? The width. Traditionally, ties are usually around 10-11cm wide. Roughly 4-5 years ago, the pencil-thin ties were very popular. It was only 5cm wide. Now, the normal wide ties are about 9-9.5cm in width while the medium or slim ties are about 7-7.5cm wide. At the moment, slim ties are in fashion mainly because they are more multi-functional. They are neither too formal nor too casual. What are the right ties for the right occasion? It really depends on the dress code but generally darker and muted colours are deemed to be more professional while bright and bold colours pass off as casual.

38

| CAMPUS PLUS

15SHEETS IS LOCATED AT: 9, JALAN TELAWI 2, BANGSAR BARU, 59100 KUALA LUMPUR. 03-22013760 WWW.15SHEETS.COM WWW.FACEBOOK.COM/15SHEETS INSTAGRAM.COM/15SHEETS

The right tie also heavily depends on what kind of suit or shirt you’re wearing. For example, if you are wearing a patterned shirt, of course pair it with a plain tie. What about the type of knots? Just stick to the basic and simple four-in-hand knot; you can’t go wrong with that, it’s suitable for every occasion. What are the common mistakes that people make when wearing a tie? One, they don’t know how to match a tie to their outfit; and two, they don’t know that it is important to match tie width with the shirt collar. There are many types of shirt collars -

standard spread, wider spread, thin and thick. If your shirt collar is too thin or short, and you wear a wide tie, it will look out of proportion. Similarly, if you wear a traditional shirt that comes with a very narrow spread and high collar, it would look weird if you paired it with a pencil-thin tie. The formula is simple – pair thinner ties with a wider spread and shorter collar shirt, leaving the wider ties to those shirts with narrower spreads and higher collars. What is your tie dimple secret? Easy, just put your finger in the centre before tightening your tie and you’ll get the perfect tie dimple!

GEN Y MONEY MATTERS

JULY 2014

What’s Making The Gen Y Broke?

40

| CAMPUS PLUS

Pursuing a higher education, working on assignments and sitting for final exa ms can take a lot out of the average student.

B

ut you know, your life doesn’t end at just obtaining your diploma or degree. Your parents (and even ours!) would constantly drill into your heads how lucky you are or how spoilt you are compared to ‘their time’. You know what? Your parents aren’t wrong. Your parents lived in a time and survived a period where money was hard to come by. So hard that some of them couldn’t even afford higher education, unlike you – and that’s only the tip of the iceberg for them with regards to the challenges that they’ve faced in their lifetime. While your whole future lies ahead of you post-graduation, there will be more challenges whether you like it or not. Challenges beyond pursuing a higher education, working on assignments and sitting for final exams. Yup. We’re talking about money matters.

Everything Is Expensive! Here’s the truth: trying to manage your finances in your 20’s is tough. Even the working crowd who are in their 30’s will tell you the same thing as it’s not something you stop doing. Of course, looking at where you tend to spend too much and saving for your future is the smart thing to do – but it isn’t always a fun thing to do. What if you’re forced to spend a certain amount a month whether or not you want to? We’re not talking about luxuries like holidays and shopping sprees. In general, the cost of living around the world is on the rise. In Malaysia, the price of everyday items are rising, including general food products and even petrol. Furthermore, when the Budget 2014 announcement came, it was announced that a GST (Goods and Services Tax) of 6% will be implemented effective 1st April 2015. That’s less than a year from now! If you don’t know what GST is, it’s a broad-based

consumption tax covering all sectors of the economy i.e. all goods and services made in Malaysia including imports. Yes, it will affect Malaysians rich and poor, old and young, employed or unemployed. Why do we need to pay taxes like these? So that the government can finance socio-economic development; which includes providing infrastructure, education, welfare, healthcare, national security etc. Even for some of those e.g. education, healthcare, the cost is on the rise!

Day-To-Day Dilemma Never mind five-yearly plans, have you actually thought about how many bank notes are ‘growing wings’ and flying out of your pockets on a day-to-day basis? Before you complain about how broke you are, have you really taken into consideration what could be causing your dilemma? Let’s put that into perspective. Take for example, branded coffee such as Starbucks. We all know that the outlet and its beverages continue to be popular despite the price hike with an average price of RM12 per

cup. With the implementation of GST, your favourite Starbucks Frappuccino could easily cost you about RM13 or more, if you take the rise in the prices of the materials needed (coffee beans, milk, sugar, cups) and logistics (transportation of the necessary materials) into account as well. Would you maybe pay RM17 for something that you used to pay RM12 for? Even if you would, how often are you willing to do that? That’s without even considering the cost of transportation e.g. toll, petrol, parking these days! By that, we don’t mean that you should walk in the scorching sun all the time. Say you need to head off to somewhere for a group assignment. In many situations, it’d be a better option to carpool with your group members than to drive separately. Carpooling is not just for the environmentally-conscious! And what about public transportation e.g. bus, train, LRT? If your said destination has the facilities, we say, why not?

Before you complain about how broke you are, have you really taken into consideration what could be causing your dilemma? 42

Breaking It Down Last year, former investment banker 27-yearold Siti Hajar Aladin made waves on social media when she posted up an open letter to Malaysian Prime Minister Datuk Seri Najib Tun Razak, detailing the financial plights of the everyday Malaysian. In her letter, the articulate Siti Hajar was very frank in explaining how a fresh graduate living in Kuala Lumpur will struggle. For example, let’s say a fresh graduate is earning about RM2,300. He/she will have to bear an accumulated monthly expenditure of at least RM2,086.60, leaving only a meagre RM213.40 for savings. This is of course based on her calculations, which has already factored in car loans, tolls, parking, petrol, room rental, utilities, food or groceries and parental stipends. Now, let’s say that you’ll need at least RM450, 000 to purchase a home (and not even the lavish, landed property type) in the Subang Jaya area or Damansara area. How long will it take for you to save enough for the down payment of the said home?

Have a budget and always stick to one!

Exactly. What’s left for savings is hardly enough! Let’s not forget that the price of property will continue to increase year after year. Even after you’ve purchased a home, you must not forget that there will be other moneygrowing-wings-and-flying-out-of-wallet times such as when you need to pay for maintenance and the monthly loan repayments. Oh, and what if you’re still paying for your student loan? Or insurance policies e.g. life, health, retirement? The horror!

Navigating The Economic Turbulence

Fiscal discipline

Have a budget and always stick to one! It’s the most important tool to properly plan the ‘in’ and ‘out’ of your pocket. If you spend less than what you earn, you’ll definitely end up with a surplus that leads into savings and investments. You don’t want to end up with a deficit that’ll require loans or the tightening of your belt, do you? If you continuously sit on deficit budgets, say for over a decade, you’d be buying a one-way ticket to financial hell. Simple things like not getting your own place yet (just because you want to) can go a long way.

It probably came as a shock to discover that getting or even renting that fancy studio apartment in Damansara will take a lot of days of drudgery and toiling away at a desk. Ditto for getting that Subaru WRX or Nissan Skyline. We hate to break it to you but it’ll take a good 20 years for anyone to even get a whiff of the rubber burning from your car tyres. Of course, there are ways to navigate around this turmoil.

GEN Y MONEY MATTERS

JULY 2014

Rain, rain, go away

Be honest We quote Hollywood celebrity

Savvy saving If you think being smart

Will Smith, “Too many people spend money they haven’t earned, to buy things they don’t need, to impress people they don’t like.” If you spend your own money on or for yourself, it’s prudent. If you spend your own money on or for others, it’s generosity. If you spend someone else’s money on or for someone else’s interest, our question is, why are you even doing that? Be honest with yourself! Spend according to affordability and rationality, and cut wastages and leakages. Besides, you really don’t need to impress anyone and generosity is not going to spawn more cash in your bank account.

Saving for rainy days is good but don’t forget that there are a few types of rainy days. Two, in fact. A ‘predictable rainy day’ is when you know it will fall i.e. time to pay off a loan. There’s also an ‘unpredictable rainy day’, when you just don’t know when or how bad it will be. Incidents such as car accidents or illnesses (yours or any one of your family members) fall under the ‘unpredictable rainy day’ type of rainy day. By saving each month, you will be more prepared when something happens. Touch wood!

with your money means putting it into a savings account, think again. The measly interest you’ll get is sure to be eaten up by inflation. That means you’re not only earning nothing by way of interest, you’re actually going to lose money. Fixed deposits accounts are not much better because you get 2-3% interest and that’s still pretty low.

Here’s the bottom line Wants and needs are two very different things that are often confused. We have to live and consume within our means, thus to save wisely. At times, it can be a struggle but it’s all about the choices we make, be it daily or five-yearly. If you don’t expect to support others later on in life because of the bad money decisions that they’ve made, don’t expect others to support you too.

“Too many people spend money they haven’t earned, to buy things they don’t need, to impress people they don’t like.”

ANN OSMAN, MALAYSIA’S FIGHTING SPIRIT

JULY 2014

They A Don’t Call T Her H

E N A For Nothing!

According to Greek religion and mythology, ‘Athena’ is the goddess of wisdom, courage, inspiration, civilization, law and justice, just warfare, mathematics, strength, strategy, the arts, crafts and skill. The sa me can be said about our very own Ann ‘Athena’ Osman.

FB: www.facebook.com/annathenaosman Instagram: instagram.com/annosman

ANN ‘ATHENA’ OSMAN

I FIRST STARTED OUT ATTENDING MUAY THAI (A COMBAT SPORT FROM THE MUAY MARTIAL ARTS OF THAILAND) CLASSES AND LATER ON, MMA. I’M A BETTER PERSON TODAY BECAUSE OF WHAT I LEARNT IN TRAINING AND MY KNOWLEDGE ON NUTRITION

I

n November 2013, Sabah-born Ann ‘Athena’ Osman became the first Muslim female to compete at a high level of MMA (mixed martial arts) when she fought Sherilyn Lim at ‘ONE FC: Total Domination’ in Singapore. She also made her mark as the first Muslim woman to fight in MMA in a Muslim country and the first Malaysian female professional MMA fighter in ‘ONE Fighting Championship’. It has been said that the charismatic Ann inherits the fighting spirit of her ancestors from Tambunan because she’s half Dusun – but she certainly is no stranger to hard work and discipline. The second child of five siblings, her upbringing has served her well in the world of MMA. She grew up helping out in her family’s small food business which nurtured her understanding of the importance of hard work, discipline and a good education. She’s also a straight ‘A’ student as well as a Dean’s List student in college and is now a Regional Business Development Manager for a real estate media company. Yup! Ann juggles MMA with a corporate career as well! One of the reasons why Ann is so passionate about fitness and healthy living is because she grew up surrounded by Sabah’s luscious green landscape. She was and still is very much an outdoorsy person. White water rafting, sea kayaking, hiking and mountain climbing are just some of the other things that she does when she’s not training. When she’s training, however, a typical ‘Ann weekday’ starts at (believe it or not) 5am with an hour-long cardio session before she goes off to work. After work, she spends about three to four hours at the gym for her fight-training. Wow. When asked about how she first decided to venture into MMA and eventually making it her career, she confessed, “Because I love outdoorsy activities, I think it just became my nature to do new things and take on new challenges, so I’ve tried out everything that’s available. I first started out attending Muay Thai (a combat sport from the muay martial arts of Thailand) classes and later on, MMA.”

“I started training to lose weight and get in shape. I never thought I’d be in the sport for this long! It’s the drive to learn more that really got me into MMA. I love the satisfaction of learning new techniques and being able to apply them. Besides, this sport builds character. I’m a better person today because of what I learnt in training and my knowledge on nutrition. I’m also more disciplined,” she said. Did her family object to her participating in MMA? She said, “Well, when I first started doing MMA, my family was very concerned about my safety. But after seeing how careful I am about looking after myself, they became fine with it. I also did my part to educate them on the safety aspects of the game. They now fully support it!” Who knew that soon after, she’d be getting her first big break with ONE FC? On top of that, most of the feedback she has gotten from Malaysians and international fans alike has been positive. In fact, Ann has been such a media darling in Malaysia despite being a Muslim and a professional MMA fighter. How does she keep herself grounded and what does she make of all her fame? Ann said, “I’ve been receiving so much positive support and I’m really flattered but I still keep myself grounded, never forgetting where I came from. I’m glad to see that we’re living in an open-minded society and I’m happy that people perceive my participation in MMA as an inspiration. I want to keep that up, to keep encouraging girls to break down barriers.” She said of her involvement in the MMA scene, “It really is an honour and honestly, I’m proud to be a part of a force in growing women’s MMA, especially here in Southeast Asia. It’s true that there are more fighters in Asia and globally but in Southeast Asia, I haven’t actually seen many. It’s just great to be part of that.” “I hope I’ve also made Malaysia proud,” she added. It’s safe to say that Ann has since been hounded (but in a good way) by media requests. She has also posed for multiple photo shoots for glossy magazines and has been glowingly highlighted by the international media. More importantly, she has been featured in stories by TIME magazine and the New York Times, both of which described her as one of the pioneers of Asian women in the male-dominated world of MMA.

THE YOUNG & THE RESTLESS IN THE WORKFORCE

JULY 2014

C’mon, say it. We all know that Gen Y bashing is a popular pastime, but do they really deserve it? Because while the Gen Y are young, smart and brash, while they may wear flip-flops to the office or listen to iPods at their desk,,they want to work. but they don’t want work to be their life.

Website: www.smh.com.au/national/gen-y-theyoung-and-the-restless-20140315-34tnx.html

T

he Gen Y is a force of as many as 70 million and the first wave is just now embarking on their careers, taking their place in an increasingly multigenerational workplace. This generation, whose members have not yet hit 30 years of age, is different from any that have come before. Unlike the generations that have gone before them, Gen Y has been pampered, nurtured and programmed with a slew of activities since they were toddlers, meaning they are both highperformance and high-maintenance. Hence, can you blame them if they’re (blissfully) unaware of what’s expected of them in the workforce? Let us break it down for you:

THE SKILLS MANAGERS LOOK FOR WHEN PROMOTING A GEN Y’ER Managers and Gen Y’ers both agree that soft skills are the most important, followed by hard skills and then digital/tech savvy skills (social media skills). 61% of managers and 65% of Gen Y’ers believe that soft skills are the most important. Both managers and Gen Y’ers agree that being a subject matter expert is important to career advancement. 65% of managers and 66% of Gen Y’ers say it’s either important or very important. The top three most important skills that managers are looking for when promoting “millennials” is the ability to prioritise work (87%), a positive attitude (86%) and teamwork skills (86%).

WORK-LIFE BALANCE ISN’T JUST A BUZZ WORD Unlike boomers who tend to put a high priority on career, today’s youngest workers are more interested in making their jobs accommodate their family and personal lives. They want jobs with flexibility, telecommuting options and the ability to go part time or leave the workforce temporarily when children are in the picture.

SOCIAL MEDIA’S ROLE IN AND OUT OF THE WORKPLACE Gen Y employees feel that they should own the rights to their own social media profiles even if they use them during work hours. Fewer managers agree that their Gen Y employees should. Out of the managers, 54% said that Gen Y’ers should have the rights to the profiles, yet 69% of Gen Y’ers said they should have them. Only 16% managers and 17% of Gen Y’ers view using social media profiles to actively contribute to online industry conversations as either very important or extremely important.

THE MANAGER AND GEN Y’ER’S RELATIONSHIP ON SOCIAL MEDIA When it comes to Facebook, only 14% of managers are either very comfortable or extremely comfortable being friends with Gen Y’ers. 24% of Gen Y’ers said the same. When it comes to connecting on LinkedIn, 32% of Gen Y’ers and 24% of their managers are either very comfortable or extremely comfortable. Gen Y’ers (38%) are more comfortable making social media introductions than managers (19%).

GEN Y’ERS DON’T GET ENOUGH FEEDBACK AT WORK AND WANT MENTORS The millennium generation has been brought up in the most child-centred generation ever. They’ve been programmed and nurtured. Hence, their expectations are different. Unlike previous generations who’ve in large part grown accustomed to the annual review, Gen Y’ers have grown up getting constant feedback and recognition from teachers, parents and coaches and can resent it or feel lost if communication

from bosses isn’t more regular. In fact, 53% of Gen Y’ers said that a mentoring relationship would help them become a better and more productive contributor to their company. Failing which, conflict can also flare up over management style. The “millennials” expects to be told how they’re doing.

IN-PERSON MEETINGS AND EMAIL TRUMP TECHNOLOGY AT WORK Despite new technologies like Skype and social networks, traditional forms of communication are still the most common ways that both managers and Gen Y’ers interact. 66% of managers say that in-person meetings are their preferred way of communicating with Gen Y’ers and 62% of employees feel the same way about how they communicate with their managers. The second most popular way of communicating between managers and Gen Y’ers was through email. 26% of managers and 25% of Gen Y’ers prefer using email.

CHANGE IS ALWAYS GOOD, VERY GOOD Gen Y’ers don’t expect to stay in a job, or even a career, for too long — they’ve seen the scandals and they’re sceptical when it comes to such concepts as employee loyalty. They don’t like to stay too long on any one assignment, mostly attributed to the fact that this is a generation of “multitaskers”, and they can juggle e-mail on their BlackBerrys while talking on cell phones and at the same time trolling online. They also believe in their own value and selfworth enough that they’re not shy about trying to change the companies they work for. That compares somewhat with Gen X (a generation born from the mid-1960s to the late-1970s) known for its independent thinking, addiction to change and emphasis on family.

CORNFLAKES COOKIES YOU NEED: 2-3 cups of cornflakes 200g salted butter 150g fine sugar 2 eggs (lightly beaten) 1 teaspoon vanilla essence 300g all-purpose flour 30g corn flour/corn starch Mini paper cups

KUEH BANGKIT YOU NEED: 500g tapioca flour 220g sugar 250g coconut milk 3 egg yolks 5 Pandan Leaves (washed, dried and cut into 1/2” pieces)

CHOCOLATE CHUNK COOKIES YOU NEED: 230g butter 300g brown sugar 1 teaspoon vanilla essence 5g of fine table salt 2 eggs 380g all-purpose flour 1 teaspoon of baking soda 300g chocolate bar, chunked up

METHOD: • •

Sift flour and baking soda to loosen up to avoid clumps. Cream butter, brown sugar, eggs, salt, and vanilla essence until light and pale.

METHOD: • • •

Pour the tapioca flour and pandan leaves into a pan. Dry fry the tapioca flour with pandan leaves for about 10-15mins over low heat (until the pandan leaves dry up). Sieve to remove pandan leaves and leave to cool overnight.

• • • • • •

Stir in sifted flour mixture. Add in the chocolate chunks and mix well to combine as evenly as possible. Grease baking trays lightly with melted butter, preheat oven to 180 °C. Roll teaspoonfuls of mixture into sized balls; arrange them on trays, slightly pressed down. Make sure it’s all well spaced-out as the cookie will grow twice the size. Bake in a preheated oven for 15-20mins or until cooked and golden brown. Leave cookies to cool slightly on the trays then lift them out onto wire racks to cool completely before packing them into airtight bags or containers.

METHOD: • • • • • • •

Pour cornflakes into a bowl and use a flat bottom cup to crush it. Pour it into a sieve to remove all the powder crumbs. Place remaining coarsely crushed cornflakes into a separate bowl. Spend some time crushing the cornflakes. Beat butter and sugar till it’s well mixed, pale and creamy. Add vanilla essence and continue mixing until it’s combined. Stir in the lightly beaten eggs.

• • • • •

Warm up the coconut milk then add in sugar and stir until sugar is fully melted. Leave aside to cool for about 20-30mins. Add in egg yolks and stir until well blended. Pour coconut mixture into tapioca flour and mix until the dough is able to stand on its own. If the dough is too soft, add in additional flour. If the dough is too dry, add in some coconut milk and egg yolks. Roll out dough and cut with cookie cutter (about 5mm thickness). Line baking tray with baking sheet, then line the cut cookies on top of it and bake over low heat at 160°C until whitish in colour. Remove to cool before packing into containers.

• • • • • • •

Slowly pour in the flour and fold in the flour mixture including the corn flour. Pre-heat the oven at 180°C. Arrange mini paper cups on to your trays. Using a teaspoon, scoop out about one teaspoon of the cookie dough and gently roll it into the coarsely crushed cornflakes. Place it on to the mini paper cups and lightly press on to it. Bake for 23 minutes or until golden brown. Remove from tray and put on the cooling rack to cool for 30 to 40mins then place in an air tight container.

Ka-ching,

Ka-ching! One of the least fun things about being a student is the lack of financial stability. When you are required to live and play within a limited budget, saving money seems almost impossible. Check out some of the fail-proof money saving tips from these four students.

I will prepare a budget because it allows me to control, plan and make the right decisions. Use a simple budgeting tool to sort expenses by category, for example, utilities, food, rent, clothing and petrol. Moreover, I will ensure that I make equal payments and save for emergencies.

The important thing is we should understand how to differentiate needs and wants. Withdrawing money without identifying these two things will lead us to buy things that are not necessary. For me as a student, I will spend more on needs like food, utilities and transportation expenses because it is more crucial than wants.

Usually I’ll make a forecast and calculate approximately the amount to be paid for my expenses, for example things like utilities, house rent, food, transportation like toll and petrol. The balance I can spend on other things such as entertainment. I also take up part time jobs to ensure I have additional money.

There’s a fail proof saving tip that I’ve learned from my mom. It’s basically pooling money or funds together, from all the participating family members. This trains each person’s discipline in that it forces them to come up with the money on time and not delay the whole process, so that the person assigned to receive the whole lump sum of money receive it on their assigned month.

AN HONEST MISTAKE

Founded back in 2008 by its lead vocalist/guitarist Darren Teh, An Honest Mistake was ironically not just an honest mistake.

W

hat started out as a solo acoustic project, the Malaysian rising indie band has been making its mark in the local music industry by bringing in addictive pop punk swirls that are highly relatable to many listeners. They have graced the music industry with 3 albums to date and have performed countless gigs all over Malaysia. In conjunction with the Laundry Music Marathon held recently in The Curve, we had the opportunity to meet and talk with Darren Teh – looking all hip from his flamboyant pinktinted hairdo – and discuss their latest projects, upcoming gigs, future goals and on how they’re planning to tackle the industry with their latest addition to the team, Ashley Chan in tow. With a new front girl vocalist, An Honest Mistake looks set on making new changes and adding a new twist to their unique blend of flavour that will change the dynamic of the

band in all the right ways. Coupled with a brand new look, the crowd can expect an exciting new sound in which the band looks forward to channelling their collective influences into their distinctive take on pop punk. Talking about their future goals, An Honest Mistake looks forward to performing on a bigger stage, across different Asian countries. Darren adds that there’s no reason to break into the Western industry for now, as there are loads of

competition with the Western bands. On the contrary, An Honest Mistake sets its sights on building up their name on the Asian stage as a whole, as there is a huge demand for English speaking Asian bands not just in our local scene, but also in the Philippines, Indonesia, Korea and Japan. Its advice for up-and-coming local bands aiming to make it big in the industry is to start with perfecting their craft and skills, as well as work on their stage performances. Socialising with other local bands and listening to new materials also helps, as this would broaden their network as they meet with different people in the industry. Darren also stated that excellent time management is very important in a band, and if you have a goal to achieve - go for it no matter what. An Honest Mistake will be releasing a new acoustic album in June, as well as another album towards the end of the year. CAMPUS PLUS |

The songs on Recess is a collection of great ideas which were strung together over the past year or so and it even has some surprising collaborations to boot. With Recess, we witness his leap into the world of K-Pop with Dirty Vibe, which features idols G-Dragon (BIGBANG leader) and CL (2NE1 leader). Try it Out (Neon Mix), on the other hand, embodies a playful and upbeat intro, developing into a very interesting and stimulating main theme for Recess. We also loved the beautiful Fire Away for its dreamlike exploration into escapism, with lyrics to match. All the tracks on Recess comes with Skrillex’s signature bass line to boot, of course. They were always more in tune with teen angst and were always more fun, as the 2014 hits compilation May Death Never Stop You proves. The 19-track compilation contains three demos plus the new song Fake Your Death, which opens a compilation that otherwise diligently marches forth in chronological order. You would otherwise recognise most songs on May Death Never Stop You – it is their greatest hits album after all. The great thing about this greatest hits album is, however, how it showcases all their brilliant moments. It’s a pity they’re no longer together as a band but hey, at least we have one solid compilation to remember them by.

It opens with a very powerful, very loud version of 99 Revolutions, followed by Angel Blue and Carpe Diem. Then finally, out of all 18 Demolicious tracks, Green Day introduces one new song – State of Shock. A true fan would say that it’s the one true solid addition to their discography, with catchy guitar hooks and the trademark Green Day lyrics that you can recognise almost immediately. Do we think this is worth getting? Why the heck not? Just remember, it’s essentially a compilation of their demos so don’t expect top-notch production quality.

album is evidence of it. Head or Heart opens with Trust, and immediately it sends Perri fans on a whirlwind of emotions. Her voice is, as usual, calm and welcoming, and swelling with passion. There’s also the incredibly fun Be My Forever, which features fellow singer-songwriter Ed Sheeran. We literally fell head over heels in love with this one! Let’s not forget to mention that their vocals matched each other’s perfectly despite coming from different musical genre backgrounds. Finally, the piano-featured The Words took our breaths away. The song is stripped down and slow, with focus on just Christina Perri’s voice alone. Dive into this one over and over again, but allow yourselves to come up for air. Our verdict? Listen to your heart and grab this album off the record store shelf.

2NE1 ALL OR NOTHING WORLD TOUR IN MALAYSIA

JULY 2014

2NE1 Gives Their All

For Malaysia

The saying holds true when the K-Pop idol girl group wrapped up their ‘All or Nothing World Tour in Malaysia’ with huge success. The concert, held at Stadium Negara in Kuala Lumpur was attended by 4,000 local fans or ‘Blackjacks’, as 2NE1’s fans are lovingly called.

M

ost of these ‘Blackjacks’ have waited five years since 2NE1’s debut to finally see the girls (CL, Bom, Dara, Minzy) perform a full show in Malaysia. Decked in colourful outfits and flanked by hunky South Korean dancers, 2NE1 kicked off their concert with the hit single off their latest album, Crush. Under innovative stage direction, the quartet performed a total of 21 songs, including ones from their 2nd full album such as, Come Back Home, Gotta Be You, Missing You and Scream. The girls also sang the older songs in their discography such as I Am The Best, Clap Your Hands, I Don’t Care and Go Away. Needless to

say, the ‘Blackjacks’ didn’t stop to even catch their breaths as they were singing along to every single song all night, in both English and Korean! After the concert, Dara thanked the fans by tweeting, “Thank you so much Blackjack Malaysia!!! We had so much fun tonight!!! We love you!!! :)” 2NE1’s latest concert was directed by world-renowned directors Travis Payne and Stacey Walker, along with a world-famous performance planning company, Live Nation, known for its involvement in the memorable concerts of Lady Gaga, Madonna and U2. Well, they (2NE1, Travis Payne, Stacey Walker and Live Nation) certainly left a memorable impression with Malaysians this time around!

SUGAR

OVERDOSE

15&

EXO

JYP Entertainment’s 15& delivers their first fulllength album. The teen duo debuted in 2012 with the single I Dream and have released two more singles since, Somebody in 2013 and most recently I Can’t Hide It in mid-April. This time, they’ve released a full album of mostly new material. The full album format is a gutsy move in a field most recently over-saturated with mini-albums, but at least we can stop complaining that the album is too short. Overall, Sugar is a fantastic first album. We’ve put this on repeat several times and it hasn’t bored us yet. We think the R&B elements really save it from obscurity and blandness, really helping it to be memorable. The songs are remarkably well-crafted and – with the exception of the title track – are never jarring. The soulful voices of our duo are excellent and this cannot be stressed enough. Give it a listen. We don’t think you’ll be disappointed.

EXO is back with their 2nd mini-album, Overdose. Having already released a handful of albums, EXO’s new release is highly anticipated by anyone who bounced and danced around to Wolf and Growl, or was swept away by Miracles In December. Since releasing their debut single Mama in 2012, pretty much whatever they touch turns to gold, shooting to #1 on the charts and taking over the physical album sales. Overdose was popular even before its official release as both the Chinese and Korean versions were leaked online and SM Entertainment revealed they were trying to find the perpetrators.

FLY TO THE SKY

JIYEON

Fly To The Sky has been topping charts in various Music Channels with their hit single You, You, You. Unsurprisingly, the duo were able to present their powerful vocals and harmonize their voices impressively well. They have a strong R&B influence which blended well with their music style. We love the title track You, You, You which has a bitter after taste to the song that is so overwhelming with sadness. Like A Lie is a little similar to You, You, You which carries their usual over-the-top R&B style and explosive emotion towards the end. It is worth listening to over and over again. The other tracks such as You, Please Don’t Call, Kiss And Say Goodbye were calm and soothing ballads. Nonetheless, this album mostly stick to the safe R&B style that we are used to hearing. Continuum is an album which you will either love it because of Fly To The Sky or you will hate it as it is just not your cup of tea.

Jiyeon of T-ara released her first solo mini-album, Never Ever, on May 20th. The track 1MIN 1SEC / Never Ever was produced by hit-maker team Duble Sidekick, and actually contains very little of what we’ve come to expect from a Duble Sidekick tune. There are no rap parts, very little stylistic excess, no collaborations. Jiyeon stands well enough on her own, and she doesn’t need guest stars to make this album any better. The rest of the album consists of instrumental tracks, presumably to push the idea that this is a mini-album and not just a single. This is a great first solo outing from a talented vocalist. Again, we think it suffers from the mini-album format, but among the three tracks that matter, there’s no filler, no sub par by-the-numbers songs. Like most mini-albums lately, we can’t get enough of it. This is a great mini-album, and easily stands as one of the best solo efforts we’ve heard.

KICK THAT HANGOVER IN THE HEAD

VER-F O R G D O S N FO

CHOCOLATE

We know, we know, they always say, “Work hard, play hard!” but whether it’s because you were at a house party or out clubbing, it’s important to know how to prevent or cure a hangover, just in case you played too hard. With these top foods to banish a hangover, you can enjoy a few drinks without having to spend the morning (and noon, and maybe the entire day) after in sloth-like mode or hunched over a toilet. No paracetamol needed. OATMEAL

BANANAS

Oatmeal might not be the first thing that comes to your mind when you are trying to get rid of a hangover, but think again. Oatmeal is nearly perfect, providing much needed B Vitamins and minerals as well as a long lasting burst of energy due to its complex carbohydrates and dietary fibre composition. Oatmeal can also help your body get rid of the alcohol faster and maintain a steady blood sugar level to help you get through the day.

Ever feel physically weak after a night of drinking? It’s not just taking in the extra liquid during an all-nighter that sends you on multiple trips to the washroom. Alcohol actually draws water from your body’s cells, creating more urine and causing you to literally flush potassium down the toilet. Low levels of potassium are linked to weak, shaky muscles and high blood pressure - all common hangover symptoms. If you’re feeling a little shaky after a night of drinking, reach out for a banana to help restore your body’s potassium levels and improve muscle function.

ASPARAGUS E a t i n g asparagus before you go out, or while you’re drinking, can help prevent or ease a next-day hangover. Scientists found that extracts taken from the leaves and shoots of asparagus boosted levels of important enzymes that break down alcohol after heavy drinking. They also suggested that eating asparagus the next day can help tame hangovers too. Hmm. Maybe bars should start putting this super veggie on the menu, huh?

JULY 2014

COCONUT WATER Alcohol molecules love H2O, so whatever alcohol you take in will grab water. The result? Your whole body, brain included, is sucked dry. So hydrate, hydrate, hydrate! While sports drinks do contain the electrolytes you need after indulging in one (or two, or three) too many alcoholic beverages, they also often contain ingredients like artificial food dyes that don’t do your brain cells any favours. A low in sugar coconut water, on the other hand, contains just as many electrolytes as an isotonic/ sports drink.

While chocolate isn’t a textbook cure for a hangover, the sugar in a piece of chocolate may help relieve symptoms of hypoglycaemia or low blood sugar, experienced after a bout of drinking. Additionally, chocolate stimulates the pleasure centres of the brain by aiding in the release of the chemicals dopamine and serotonin. This means that chocolate may improve your emotional state when fighting an uncomfortable hangover. You should eat chocolate in moderation though because too much chocolate can give you a headache!

MAC & CHEESE When it comes to hangover cures, there’s just no substitution for a big and warm serving of macaroni and cheese. Not just any macaroni and cheese - it has to be processed and it has to come in a box i.e. Kraft Macaroni and Cheese. Besides, when or if you wake up with a hangover in the morning, wouldn’t you want to cure your hangover with something that tastes so damn good that you want to be hungover more often? Exactly.

CLEAR LIQUIDS We can’t believe that we’re actually suggesting this but it has been proven drink more alcohol. However, it’s important to just focus on the clear liquid ones such as rum, vodka and gin. This, of course, doesn’t mean that you can have a cocktail of all of the above. Say if you really need to get rid of a hangover the next day, help yourself to one serving of mojito. Avoid more congener-rich spirits like brandy, champagne, bourbon, cognac, whiskey, red wine, and tequila. It’ll be gone before you know it! CAMPUS PLUS |

BAD BOY COOKS, THE ALL-AMERICAN DINER

JULY 2014

There’s a

Diner in Town

If there’s one thing all American movies can make us wish for, it’s a classic diner serving up burgers and hotdogs followed by cool, frothy milkshakes.

Y

ou can’t help but notice how movies portray them to be ideal date spots, gossip central for friends and family hangouts. Today, Malaysia sees its first home grown diner: Bad Boy Cooks; an Americanstyled diner that sees its second branch in Setia Walk, Puchong after its first branch in Oasis Damansara. Bad Boy Cooks Setia Walk has the classic interior of a typical American diner with black and white floor tiles and red vinyl booths running along the sides. Classic metal tables are paired with red and white chairs in the centre, welcoming about 110 diners at a time. Short of a jukebox belting music from the 80s and paper hats on the head of servers, it’s as classic as classic can be. What makes Bad Boy Cooks a true winner in the F&B industry are the unbeatable prices offered with no strings attached. Customers can expect to spend an average of RM15 for a meal as prices range from RM9 to RM20. These affordable rates for Western food allow students and working adults to enjoy a good meal within their budget. The Bad Boy Cooks menu offers a range of diner meals from snacks and mains to killer milkshakes and desserts. For light bites between conversations, go for the Bad Boy Wings, the classic American appetiser. Perfectly fried wings are slathered in a sauce that’s harmoniously put

together to offer a taste of sweet, tangy and spicy at the same time. Rumbling tummies can fill up on burgers that come in five varieties with the house special being the Sloppy BB; a freshly made beef patty topped with the special beef chilli served with a side of fries. It’s messy and delicious with just the right amount of spice. While it doesn’t match up to gourmet burgers or the popular variety of artisan patties, this house special is made to fit the bill of the typical diner menu. If soups and salads are your thing, don’t miss out on the tomato soup, made from fresh ingredients and served with diced tomatoes, onions and carrots. It’s guaranteed to satisfy your palate. The warmth in taste and aroma offers a sense of comfort, reminding me of homemade soup that would come out of mom’s kitchen on a rainy day. Pair this dish with a tuna salad for a healthy and delicious fill. For the parents and folks who’d love a diner experience but not so much the burgers and pasta, there are a couple of Japanese choices for an Asian twist. A personal favourite is the Katsu Chicken rice bowl, served with soft and tender chicken over a bowl of perfectly cooked Japanese rice. The extensive drinks menu is just as exciting with coffee beans from Brazil and Columbia to brew your perfect cuppa

or go for an alcoholic kick with a chilled beer, an apple cider or class it up with a glass of house pouring wine. If you’d like to stay true to your diner experience, then pick a milkshake or a mocktail milkshake where kitchen masterminds introduce dairy and a blender to regular bar mocktails, creating some pretty fantastic flavours. The pomegranate milkshake was definitely a favourite, but be warned that it’s pretty filling and might leave little room for dessert. Oh, have I mentioned that dessert is on the menu too? The diner serves homemade cookies, brownies and the regular do of ice cream and banana splits. But if you’re feeling in need of a sugar rush, give the Bad Boy Madness a try. Staying true to its name, the madness comes in the form of a big, chaotic, sugary treat that starts with three scoops of ice cream at the bottom and is built up with 2 homemade cookies that sandwiches a house special brownie and topped with a generous amount of whipped cream, sprinkles and chocolate chips and plated with a banana, split style. This sugar tower is a hit with youngsters and especially great when in need of a birthday cake replacement. The verdict? The food comes off as average but is balanced out by the charm of a quintessential diner, and attractive prices. But it must be said, those killer milkshakes can bring anyone into their yard. HE TEXTED: THE ULTIMATE GUIDE TO DECODING GUYS AUTHOR: LISA WINNING & CARRIE HENDERSON MCDERMOTT

Lisa Winning hails from Australia and attended the London School of Economics before landing in New York City to figure out this whole texting game. Having spent years watching her girlfriends scream, “He texted!” the morning after a long night out, she realised they needed a bigger outlet. Her friends, like most girls, would sit around for hours while they hashed out exactly what to text back and when (wait an hour? or right away? is that desperate?). After her own fair share of awkward texts and kill-me-now dates, Lisa figured there had to be more girls going through this. So, she created the ‘HeTexted’ website. Carrie Henderson McDermott is the co-founder and editorial director of HeTexted. Previously, Carrie worked at Glamour magazine, where she wrote about all things beauty-related. So, when she’s not busy telling you how to respond to the 3am text (read: don’t!), she can point you in the direction of a mean blow-out. Or explain why most guys hate red lipstick on a first date. This hilarious and essential guide from the founders of HeTexted.com will help you autocorrect your digital dating life, from decoding your Facebook friendships, to reading the intentions behind guys’ perplexing texts, to deciding when (if ever) you should text him first.

LENOVO YOGA TABLET 8 FLEXIBILITY IN YOUR HANDS The world’s largest PC maker added on to its bendy Yoga stable of tablets with the 8-inch Yoga Tablet 8. Taking a page from the preceding Yoga devices in Lenovo’s lineup, the Yoga Tablet 8 has as its unique feature a multimode design that offers flexibility and value-for-money functionality. So how good is it really? Check out our review to find out. DESIGN The cylindrical-shaped battery on the Yoga Tablet 8 is simply a masterstroke of design. Not only does it house an endurance-busting battery, but it offers superb grip for even the smallest of hands when holding the tablet onehanded, like when you’re reading an e-zine or e-book. Within the barrel-shaped bulge is a sturdy kickstand that transforms the device from Hold Mode to a propped up position (Stand Mode), on which you can stand it vertically on a surface. This mode is great for watching movies or YouTube videos on. Then you have the Tilt Mode, which is achieved by rotating the tablet so that the top edge of the kickstand is resting on the surface. This mode makes it easy to type or draw on the display.

Because the battery is housed within the cylindrical shaped part, it frees up the rest of the tablet to be light and ultra-flat. Indeed, it’s so flat that it seems anorexic from the side view, and passes off looking like you’re holding a magazine. A 5MP camera is situated on the curve of the barrel, while the volume rocker is on the right edge and microUSB port lines up the left edge. The tablet’s microSD card slot is hidden under the kickstand. Two speakers are located at the bottom of the tablet’s face, just above the hinge.

DISPLAY & AUDIO The screen sports 1280 x 800 resolution, not exactly on the high end of the resolution spectrum, but it delivered decent enough visuals. Colours are bright and vivid though, and it does provide great viewing angles. For a relatively small-sized tablet, the sound booming out from its twin Dolby-enhanced speakers is pretty sweet. The audio’s crisp yet packs an immersive surround-sound experience.

PROCESSOR & PERFORMANCE Powered by a 1.2GHz quad-core MT8215/8389 processor with 1GB of RAM, it’s respectable enough to run most apps and processes smoothly. However, speeds do become sluggish when multiple apps are opened, and graphicsintensive games do show up the tablet’s lack of processing grunt. Because it’s packing a 6,000 mAh Li-Ion polymer battery, Lenovo claims that the Yoga Tablet 8 will last up to a whopping 18 hours of Wi-Fi Web browsing a single charge. In reality, it all depends on the settings and usage, but there’s more than plenty of juice to last you through the day.

OTHER FEATURES & CONCLUSIONS The 5MP rear camera features 4x digital zoom and took pretty decent and reasonable shots, but only if conditions are good. The 1.6MP front camera is a far more useful feature, especially when the tablet is securely propped up in Stand Mode as it means hands-free video calls or chats with your friends and family. Oh, and did we mention it comes with a voice call feature? That’s right; it’s SIM-card ready as well. So, if you can live with its heavy-handed skin on top of Android 4.2.2, and if you find its “multimode” concept enticing, coupled with its mega-long battery life, then the Lenovo Yoga Tablet 8 is as good as any tablet can get at its price point. For more information, visit www.lenovo. com/my/en or www.facebook.com/LenovoMY We liked: Sleek, super-slim and attractive shell Versatile multimode Long battery life Comfortable to hold/excellent grip Supports voice calls We disliked: Anaemic processing power Cluttered home screen

BMW M4 CONVERTIBLE

JULY 2014

C

onvertible variants of popular sports cars are all the rage these days, and the good folks at BMW have not neglected to give its mighty popular M4 line a drop top version. As a replacement for its outgoing M3 convertible, the M4 convertible has big shoes to fill. So can it? For starters, it’s got the looks part down pat. No doubt it bears an uncanny resemblance to the M3, but look closely and you’ll see that the M4 flashes a more menacing and aggressive styling, particularly around the reworked headlights and brake lights as well as larger air intakes and Air Curtains at the front end. A long, muscular bonnet, side gills, 19in wheels and fire-spewing quad exhaust pipes complete the exterior. The M4’s interior is aggressively accented with red trims with an abundance of the requisite ‘M’ badging. Completing the sporty look are plush, red leather bucket seats that comes with Air Collar. What’s that you say? Well, it’s BMW’s take on the Mercedes ‘Air Scarf’, and it’s a fan mounted between the head-rest and upper

seat bolster which serves to keep the driver’s neck warm when the roof’s down. Speaking of the roof, it’s a three-part metal roof that can be lowered or raised at speeds of up to 8mph in 20 seconds, and its operation is about 2dB quieter than the M3’s. Though the car definitely looks much sexier with its top down than up. There’s not much change in the power train of the M4 Convertible. It’s the same twinturbocharged, 3.0L straight-six S55 engine as found in the new M4 Coupe and M3 Saloon, and produces the same powerful 431bhp and 406lb-ft of torque. However, there’s a mild performance deficit compared to its coupe cousin, as it takes 4.6 seconds from standstill to 100kmh with the standard-fit manual gearbox. It only takes the coupe 4.3 seconds. That’s because the M4 Convertible weighs in at 1,750kg, about 200kg heavier than the M4 Coupe. On the flip side, when compared to the M3 Convertible, it’s lighter by about 60kg, due to the liberal use of aluminium in the construction of the car’s bonnet, front wings and some chassis components.

FOR THOSE WHO DO

JULY 2014

Taking place in Taylor’s University and TAR UC on 27 & 28 May and at Sunway University on 3 June 2014, the Lenovo Back To School Roadshow was a carnivallike event that offered raucous fun for everyone. Students just had to “Like” Lenovo’s Malaysia Facebook page to be eligible to participate in a host of exciting games and be in the running for attractive prizes at the event. On top of that students who registered with Lenovo were entitled to cool discount vouchers on selected Lenovo products on their next purchase. The Powershoot Football game was a riot as participants tested their footie skills. The winners in this game walked away with RM300, RM200, RM100 and unlimited mystery gifts of two RM5 KFC vouchers. Another entertaining game was the Tablet Warrior game which was played on Lenovo tablets. Each of the top three high scorers received a RM100 cash prize.

TOP GUNS OVER MALAYSIA

JULY 2014

We were in awe by the stunning aerial daredevilry that sliced through the airspace of our picturesque administrative capital on the weekend of 17 and 18 May 2014. The event was the third race of the year and marked a historic first time the Red Bull Air Race had been held in Malaysia. We got to see live and up close some of the best pilots in the world skilfully flying their mean machines and engaging in a battle royale to become Champion. Though a relatively new sport on our shores, the Red Bull Air Race quickly took-off in a very big way here, judging from the positive reactions and huge support from Malaysians. What’s more, our very own ace pilot, Datuk Halim Othman proudly flew the colours of the country in the Challenger Cup qualifying round.
