Xosha Roquemore:

THE REALIST WORDS BY DIO ANTHONY PHOTOS BY TJ MANOU

MINDY KALING KNOWS HOW TO PICK ’EM. XOSHA ROQUEMORE IS ONLY ONE OF THE HANDFUL OF ACTORS THAT BRINGS MY REWIND FEATURE TO USE WEEKLY ON FOX’S THE MINDY PROJECT. THE 30-YEAROLD ACTRESS PLAYS TAMRA WEBB, A NEW YORK NURSE WORKING AT SHULMAN & ASSOCIATES WITH THE REST OF THE MISFITS AT THE OFFICE. AS EXPECTED, AND OFTEN CAUSED BY MINDY LAHIRI (MINDY KALING), HILARITY ENSUES. TO NO MINDY FAN’S SURPRISE, ROQUEMORE SAYS IT’S A GOOD TIME COMING TO WORK EVERYDAY, AND THAT KALING, HER CO-STAR AS WELL AS SIMULTANEOUS SHOWRUNNER, IS, ASIDE FROM BEING A GREAT BOSS, A CONSTANT INSPIRATION. JUST THIS SEASON, MINDY HAS SUCCESSFULLY ENTERED HER FIRST REAL ADULT RELATIONSHIP WITH FELLOW “ASSOCIATE” DANNY CASTELLANO (CHRIS MESSINA), A COURTSHIP THAT HAS BEEN HINTED AT IN THE PAST AND HAS NOW, AFTER A COUPLE SEASONS, FINALLY COME 91

TO FRUITION. I HAD TO ASK—NOT AS TAMRA, BUT AS XOSHA - DOES SHE THINK THE DUO WILL LAST? “I HOPE SO!” SHE SAID EXCITINGLY. “I REALLY LIKE THEM TOGETHER.” SO DOES AMERICA, BUT ROQUEMORE’S TAMRA HAS HER OWN LOVE-NEST TO MANEUVER: THAT OF HER OTHER CO-WORKER, THE LOVEABLE AND ZANY MORGAN TOOKERS (IKE BARINHOLTZ), A ROMANCE UNLIKE THAT OF THE TRIAL AND ERROR VARIETY THAT DANNY AND MINDY’S RELATIONSHIP HAS FLOURISHED IN. “WHEN I FIRST STARTED ON THE SHOW, I NEVER EXPECTED THEM TWO TO WIND UP TOGETHER,” SHE CONFESSES. “TAMRA HAD A BOYFRIEND WHO SHE’D NEVER SHUT UP ABOUT, SO IT JUST DIDN’T SEEM LIKELY. PLUS, TAMRA WASN’T GIVING HIM MUCH PLAY,” SHE SAYS, CAUSING US BOTH TO LAUGH. “BUT IKE IS SUCH A SWEET GUY AND HE PLAYS MORGAN AS SUCH A SWEET CHARACTER, SO I CAN SEE HOW IT HAPPENED.” February 2015 - BELLO

When I was in college at NYU I’d let myself think I wasn’t as good as the others because I was funny and everyone else was crying all over the place.

LAST SEASON, ROQUEMORE WAS UPPED TO SERIES REGULAR AFTER AN ARC ON THE COMEDY’S FRESHMAN SEASON ... A MOVE THAT I BELIEVE HAD TO HAPPEN, CONSIDERING THAT BEFORE HER ARRIVAL THERE WERE NO AFRICAN AMERICANS ON THE NEW YORK SET SHOW. TAMRA’S ENTRANCE WAS A LATE ONE, BUT AN IMPORTANT ONE. ON HER FIRST COUPLE OF DAYS AS A SERIES REGULAR, THE NYU TISCH GRADUATE RUBBED SHOULDERS WITH HOLLYWOOD RENAISSANCE MAN, JAMES FRANCO, ONE OF THE MANY LAUGH-OUT-LOUD DROOLWORTHY GUEST STARS TO GRACE THE SHOW’S TIMESLOT.

The novelty and experience of it all was not lost on the young actress. “That was exciting,” she admits. “He’s a big star aside from being really, really hot,” she giggles, while I laugh in agreement. “Usually Tamra doesn’t really get to act with many of the guest-stars. Most of the time they’re tied to Mindy’s love life, so they don’t come through the office. In the case of Franco, it was different, [as] his role originat[ed] at the firm.” For those joyously praising the writers of The Mindy Project for Tamra’s increasing amount of screen-time, I’m right there with you. And Roquemore, undoubtedly one of the funnier characters on the show, is here to set the record straight on her ability to jump between genres as seamlessly as she jumps between jokes. “Most of my artistic life I’ve been dealing with this whole thing of comedy and prestige being mutually exclusive, and I just don’t think they are,” she begins to tell me. “When I was in college at NYU I’d let myself think I wasn’t as good as the others because I was funny and everyone else was crying all over the place,” she recalls. “But I’m funny; that’s just me. I believe that to be a good actor you have to be

93

very smart, and to be a good comedian you have to be very smart. So the line tends to blur.” Outside of becoming Tamra on a daily basis, Roquemore is fashion-obsessed, as is evident in her naming her favorite pieces of the seasons: her colorful furs. Although she lives in LA and can only enjoy her fun faux furs at night, she isn’t oblivious to the advantages west coast residing fashion lovers have over her college town, the very cold New York City. “Even though it’s sometimes fun to dress for fall in New York, sometimes it gets too cold, and that can kind of cramp your style, too. You have to wear so many layers and so your outfit isn’t revealed until you get inside of a place. Your coat has to really be on fleek to be dope in New York. Your outerwear just has to be on point at all times. That’s really the first thing people see. Your coat is like your car out there. In LA, there’s still some flexibility. The change in temperature from day [to] night gives you the freedom to switch it up.” As our chat comes to a close, she sounds more and more like her Mindycreated equal. It is both amusing and glorious. February 2015 - BELLO

Spotlight on the Artist

Kirin Bhatty MAKEUP ARTIST

Instagram @Kirinstagram / Twitter @KirinBhatty BY NICOLE WALMSLEY

KIRIN BHATTY WORKS WITH SOME OF HOLLYWOOD’S MOST BEAUTIFUL AND CHARMING WOMEN: KIERNAN SHIPKA, JESSICA PARÉ, ALESSANDRA AMBROSIO, AND JENNY SLATE TO NAME JUST A FEW. HERE SHE SHARES WITH US HOW SHE GOT STARTED AS A MAKEUP ARTIST AND WHAT IT TAKES TO FIND YOUR WAY IN THE INDUSTRY.

What did you want to be when you were growing up? Well, as a very young girl, I was really obsessed with becoming a Blue Angels stunt pilot! I loved watching them do all those amazing, unreal movements, and they were very brave. It seemed more plausible to me than becoming a fairy princess or something like that. As I got a little older, my focus shifted

to magazines, and I really wanted to be a music writer and work for Rolling Stone. That idea evolved into wanting to become beauty editor...and now I’m here! When did you start doing makeup and how did you choose it as a career? It’s been years! Before becoming an artist and after I graduated from UC 102

team is such an amazing process to be a part of. This is where you really get to be an artist, and also where you get to be influenced and inspired by the other artists on your team. How would you describe your style as a makeup artist? Berkeley, I had a few jobs and was really trying to find my way in the career space. There was always something that just didn’t feel right intuitively to me. After an eight-hour day at the office I was drained and was never happy in any job I held. I knew that makeup artistry was right for me shortly after I began assisting. I worked two fourteen-hour days back to back, on my feet, assisting and running around on set, making very little money, and I couldn’t wait to go back. I wasn’t drained, I was excited. I like making people feel good, and I get to do that every time someone is in my chair. I love the connection and the bond you get to create in the hair and makeup room. On set, there is a special bond that forms; you get to be part of a tiny, piecemeal family who are all working toward the same goal of creating something beautiful. After I discovered this, I knew that this was exactly where I wanted to be. Where I was meant to be. What part of your job do you enjoy the most? I love connecting with my clients, and everyone else on set. Being around so many creative people who are all focused on the same goal... it feels like you’re part of a creative collective. It’s very inspiring. I also love the “prep” part. I always loved school, so anytime there is a shoot and I have to delve into references, I love that. Pulling inspiration, playing and manipulating products, and hashing it out with the

103

I would say that I am a lighthanded artist who places an emphasis on gorgeous skin and a “lit from within” type of beauty. What are your top five go-to products right now? Can I have nine? I need nine. Tool: Beauty Blender Skin: Goat Milk Cream by Kate Somerville Face: NARS Creamy Radiant Concealer Cheek: Chanel Blush in Rose Bronze Highlight: Armani Fluid Sheer #2 Lip: Charlotte Tilbury lipsticks Brow: Dior Universal Brow Styler Sculpt: Smashbox Contour Kit Shadow: NARS Cordura All-time favorite tip or trick? I apply almost everything with a damp beauty blender, from skin care to cheeks, to even eyes sometimes. What trends are you excited about for this season? I love that the emphasis on glowing simple skin is back in a big way. Warm nudes and roses on the lips and face are really exciting to see because they require a much more delicate touch. What is your makeup pet peeve? Running out of something that I love on set! And also finding out that a product I love and swear by has been discontinued.

What inspires you in your work? It feels new every single time because it is. Whether it’s a red carpet moment or an editorial, every single job is different, and so you have to “show up” every time. You can’t be on autopilot in this job; you have to be prepared and capable because there is never a guarantee, and that is what keeps you hungry and makes it important for me to be my best on set every single time. How do you spend your time outside of work? I have lovely friends and a great family, so when I’m not working I’m hanging with them. I love trying new restaurants, and I love music, so the likelihood of catching me at a new restaurant or a concert in my free time is high. What advice would you give someone who wants to be a makeup artist? Assist! And when you feel like you can’t assist anymore, keep assisting. Never say no to a job in the beginning, and never rule any possibility out. You may begin thinking that you only want to do celebrity or fashion, and realize later that film or TV is a better fit. Or vice versa. This career has so many pockets inside of it, so allow yourself some real soul searching coupled with some good old fashioned trial and error. The possibilities are really endless, so try everything! Rule things out and then focus and streamline your energy on where you want to be.

FEBRUARY MEANS VALENTINE’S DAY: A HOLIDAY FOR LOVERS, FRIENDS, AND ALL THOSE WHO ARE SPECIAL IN YOUR LIFE. THESE GOODIES ARE SWEET AND PERFECTLY GIFTABLE FOR THE ONES YOU LOVE...OR TO TREAT YOURSELF. I don’t think there’s anything more luxurious than Marchesa Hair Mist. With notes of iris, black currant, night blooming jasmine, Bulgarian rose water and orange blossom, you’ll leave behind a delicate lingering scent, just romantic and intoxicating enough to be remembered.

Champagne Kisses Enhancing Lip Balm by Votre Vu hydrates and plumps for kissable lips. Shea butter, celery leaf cell extract and almond oils combine to create a nourishing formula. A hint of mimosa flavor will make you want to reapply again and again. Votrevu.com

For that rosy-cheeked glow that looks great on pretty much everyone, Hourglass Ambient Lighting Blush is a must. Its photoluminescent technology amplifies color and delivers a radiant, natural finish. Pretty! Nordstrom.com

Le Labo Rose 31 Shower Gel smells like the real thing... yet the scent somehow manages to embody a quality that is both feminine and masculine; perhaps it’s the added spicy and woodsy notes of cumin, cedar and touch of amber. Plus, the gorgeous packaging will look great in your shower. Barneys.com

If you’re looking for a toxinfree polish, look no further than Chrome Girl Nail Lacquer. It’s vegan, cruelty free and produced without formaldehyde, DBP, toluene, fomaldehyde resin or camphor. The highly pigmented polish is bold, playful, and has a creative spirit. The Valentines Day Set includes three shades: “Love Note,” “Between the Sheets,” and “Pillow Talk.” Ooh la la!
