Conrad L Hall, cinematographer
Born: 21 June, 1926, in Papete, Tahiti Died: 4 January, 2003, in Santa Monica, California, aged 76
A PAINSTAKING perfectionist who sculpted his images in light and shadow, the cinematographer Conrad L Hall received nine Oscar nominations throughout his 50-year career, winning the award for Butch Cassidy And The Sundance Kid (1969) and American Beauty (1999). His attention to detail, bold experiments in colour and high standards made him one of the most respected artists in the film industry with a body of work that included In Cold Blood (1967), Cool Hand Luke (1967), Marathon Man (1976) and Road To Perdition (2002), which is expected to bring him a further Oscar nomination in the spring.
"Every film that he worked on was something beautiful to the eye," claimed the Perdition producer, Richard Zanuck, a longtime colleague.
