Russian drama Loveless from director Andrey Zvyagintsev has picked up two European Film Awards for technical achievement, with Michail Krichman winning the best European cinematographer honor and Evgueni and Sacha Galperine getting the award for European composer of the year.
The latest film from the Oscar-nominated director of Leviathan looks at a tense search for a missing child that reveals the pathologies at the heart of Russian society.
Loveless, which premiered in Cannes, is one of the five titles up for the top prize of European film of the year, which will be awarded at a ceremony in Berlin on Dec. 9.
Two other best film front-runners, Ruben Ostlund’s art society satire The Square and Robin Campillo’s AIDS drama BPM (Beats Per Minute), also nabbed technical awards, with Josefin Asberg taking the European production designer honor for The Square and Campillo winning the European editor prize.
Other technical EFAs announced Tuesday include best European costume designer to Katarzyna Lewinska for Spoor, from directors Agnieszka Holland and Katarzyna Adamik; European hair and makeup artist 2017 to Leendert van Nimwegen, for Martin Koolhoven’s neo-western Brimstone; and European sound designer of the year to Oriol Tarrago, for work on J.A. Bayona’s A Monster Calls.
