価値論または倫理学の文脈で使われる場合は、二つの異なる価値や二つの異なる帰結に共通の物差しをあてがうことができない状況を指すのに使われる。これは功利主義の立場に対する、どうやって功利計算をするのか、といった問題と関わる。
