種類

主なものとしては、以下がある^[1][2]。

• 語末のtの脱落 - can’(t), cu(t), ho(t)
• 語末のdの脱落 - goo(d)
• 語末のgの脱落 - gettin(g), walkin(g)
• 語頭のhの脱落(文中) - (h)im, (h)er
• 語頭のthの脱落(文中) - (th)em
• 語頭のaの脱落(文中) - (a)bou(t), (a)n(d)

その他、特にアメリカ英語では、nやr(+e/i)等を後続する語中のシュワー/ə/の脱落が頻繁に起きる。

縮約・弛緩発音

こうしたリダクションに、リンキングの結合や、フラッピングの変化が加わるなどして、様々な「縮約」（短縮、contractions）や「弛緩発音」（訛り/崩し発音、relaxed pronunciation）が生じる^[3]。

（「弛緩発音」を反映した崩した非標準的な綴り・表記は、「視覚方言」と呼ばれる。）
