2016年の都市圏人口は624万人[2]。オンタリオ湖西岸を囲むゴールデン・ホースシュー（Golden Horseshoe）と呼ばれる都市化された地域の人口はおよそ924万人とされる。
またヒューロン語で「集まる場所」という意味がある。1834年までの旧名はヨーク（Town of York）。
