最初にRex Anglorum（イングランド王）の称号を用いたのはマーシア王オファであるが、その権力は彼の後には生き延びることはなかった。9世紀にケント及びマーシアからサセックスを征服したウェセックス国王 エグバートは次第にイングランドの他の王国に支配を及ぼすようになった（このイングランド君主一覧では8世紀後半のマーシア国王 オファから始める）。また、エグバートの孫 アルフレッド大王 とその男子のエドワード長兄王は〝アングロ＝サクソン人の王〟の称号を用いた。
