イングランドの王（Rex Anglorum）の称号を初めて公式文書で記録し、イングランド王国が成立したのは長兄王の子 アゼルスタンの時代（972年のノーサンブリア王国占領時）である。また、ヘンリー2世の治世の開始時（1154年）に称号がイングランド国王（Rex Angliae）になった。
ウェールズ公国は1284年のルゥドドランの法令でイングランド王国に吸収され、1301年にエドワード1世は長男のエドワード2世にプリンス・オブ・ウェールズの称号を授けた。この時以来、エドワード3世を例外として全てのイングランド君主の長男はこの称号を帯びるようになった。1603年のエリザベス1世の死後、イングランドとスコットランドの王位はジェームズ1世のもとで一つとなった。国王の布告によってジェームズ1世は自らの称号を「グレートブリテンの王」とした。ジェームズ1世の即位以来、親を介して二重の相続人である両王国の後継者の称号を「イングランド王」ないしは「イングランド女王」とするのは、ジェームズ1世の布告に照らせば不正確である。しかし、この称号は今日に至るまでしばしば用いられる用法として存続している。1707年にイングランドはスコットランドと法律上合同を行い、グレートブリテン王国が成立した。1707年以来、イングランドは法律上は、グレートブリテン王国以降の連合王国から分離していない（ただし、スコットランドについては、連合王国の法体系上特別な扱いがなされることも多い）。ヘンリー2世以来、イングランドの支配下に置かれているアイルランド王国は1800年の連合法によって翌1801年にグレートブリテンおよびアイルランド連合王国の一部となった。この状態はアイルランド自由国成立後の1922年まで続き、その後の改名 (en) の結果、イングランドを含む連合王国の名称はグレートブリテンおよび北アイルランド連合王国となった。
マーシア王国
幾つかの資料では最初にRex Anglorum の称号を用いたのは757年以来、マーシア王であったオファの774年だと言われているが、この主張は明らかに10世紀に偽造された憲章に基づいている[1][2]。 しかし、自らをOf Rx Aと刻んだ幾つかのオファの貨幣から彼がOf Rx Aの立場にあったと信じられている[3]。このことは当時、後世に獲得したのとは異なる意味を有していた。即ちアングル人の王であって、必ずしもサクソン人の王ではない[3]。

ウェセックス王国
以下の一覧では、ウェセックス国王として最初にイングランド全域に君主権を及ぼしたエグバートから明記している[4]。エグバートは825年にマーシア王国を破ってブレトワルダ（七王国における最強の王）になった。しかし、829年にはマーシアの支配権を喪失している。また、彼の孫 アルフレッド大王とその男子のエドワード長兄王は〝アングロ＝サクソン人の王〟の称号を用いた。
