Political leaders set for TV debate ahead of Spain’s election

CLASH: The party leaders at a televised 2015 debate

THE LEADERS of Spain’s four main political parties have agreed to a televised debate as opinion polls signal potential election deadlock.

Spain’s prime minister and PSOE leader Pedro Sanchez will appear on RTVE with the leaders of Podemos, the conservative Popular Party and centrist Citizens.

This comes after Spain’s election board banned the far-right party Vox from participating in a five-way debate to be held by the broadcaster Atresmedia.

“Atresmedia maintains that a debate between five candidates is of the greatest journalistic value and most relevance for voters,” said the network after the ruling.

Opinion polls have signalled the election, to be held on April 28, could result in a deadlock with neither the left or the right able to build a parliamentary majority.
