Slick on the surface but loaded with artful touches, Brian DePalma's classical gangster thriller is a sharp look at period Chicago crime, featuring excellent performances from a top-notch cast.

Yuval D an Underrated. so good Rated 5 out of 5 stars 03/24/24 Full Review Larry K Really great gangster movie. Wish there was more Al Capone in this!! Rated 4 out of 5 stars 03/13/24 Full Review Augustine J This movie has everything I would want an 80s movie about the 30s to have. Kevin Costner is great as Elliot Ness. Robert De Niro's Al Capone is a little over the top, but what isn't in this movie. It doesn't really matter that the film is highly fictional, because the story it tells is a good one. The action sequences are good, although somebody needs to kill the sound effect guy. He knows what he did. Regardless, this movie is great. Go watch it if you have the chance. Rated 5 out of 5 stars 03/09/24 Full Review Alec C The only way to take down someone as impenetrable as Al Capone is to get yourselves down and dirty as well! As the overwhelming shadow of Capone looms over Chicago, Elliot Ness recruits some hard-nose cops who can't be bribed or beaten and begins a crusade to bring the powerful mobster down for good. With its iconic cast and impressive shoot-outs, this is one of the most memorable crime epics ever that still manages to hold up after all these years! Rated 5 out of 5 stars 02/23/24 Full Review Autumn M The Untouchables is the story of the downfall of Al Capone. It is told in the typical cat-and-mouse storyline . Robert De Niro is perfect in the role of the dimwitted don who manages to rule by intimidation and bribes. Recommended. Rated 3.5 out of 5 stars 02/19/24 Full Review Joseph S "The Untouchables" is a gripping cinematic triumph. Brian De Palma's direction, coupled with David Mamet's sharp screenplay, delivers a taut and compelling narrative. Stellar performances by Kevin Costner, Sean Connery, and Robert De Niro elevate this prohibition-era tale of justice and corruption. A timeless classic in the crime genre. Richard Roeper Chicago Sun-Times “The Untouchables” is heavy on the fiction, but thanks in large part to those great Chicago locales, it feels palpable and real. Jun 1, 2022 Full Review George Morris Chicago Reader To paraphrase William Butler Yeats, the moral, psychological, and emotional center of The Untouchables, like that of all of De Palma’s movies and like that of Reagan’s administration, simply cannot hold. Rated: 1/4 May 9, 2022 Full Review Bob Thomas Associated Press The Untouchables is a terrific movie, full of the same brand of fierce vitality that made the 1930s gangster films so compelling. Jul 17, 2019 Full Review Christopher Lloyd The Film Yap Brian De Palma and David Mamet's genre masterpiece is an opera of sentiment and sadism, the story of a good man who adopts the brutish tactics of his enemy but somehow remains untouched. Rated: 5/5 Oct 16, 2023 Full Review Christopher Connor The Film Magazine It is an impeccably acted film with some strong cinematography and a fine score from Ennio Morricone. It successfully updates its 50s source material and still feels timely over 30 years removed from its release Aug 8, 2023 Full Review Manuel São Bento MSB Reviews The Untouchables still holds up incredibly well after more than thirty years. Production-wise, not only do the sets and costumes seamlessly resemble the Prohibition Era, but Brian DePalma’s technically impressive blocking and framing are a joy to watch.
