AFI Fest will hold a special tribute to iconic Italian actress Sophia Loren when the American Film Institute’s annual film festival takes place in November.
The evening celebration, taking place on Wednesday, Nov. 12, coincides with the 50th anniversary of Marriage Italian Style, a film which garnered Loren, 79, a best actress Oscar nomination. The 1964 movie, which was restored by Cineteca di Bologna, the Technicolor Foundation for Cinema Heritage and Memory Cinéma, will be screened as part of the tribute.
The first poster for the 2014 festival (shown at left) features a photo of Loren, taken in the summer of August 1965.
The international star, who has appeared in more than 60 films in her career, was the first artist to win a best actress Oscar for a foreign-language performance for her work in 1960’s Two Women. Loren’s other work includes Houseboat (1958), That Kind of Woman (1959), It Started in Naples (1960), Arabesque (1966) and The Voyage (1974). She most recently appeared in 2009’s musical Nine and the 2014 short film Human Voice, which screened at the Cannes Film Festival.
“In a world where the daily obsession seems to be, ‘What’s next?’ Sophia Loren is a rare and welcome reminder that true talent is timeless,” said AFI president and CEO Bob Gazzale in a statement. “It is AFI’s honor to shine a proper light on all the gifts she’s given the world across the years.”
AFI Fest runs Nov. 6-13 in Hollywood.
